6 Winter Prep Checklist Tips:
1. Trim your Trees
In this month's newsletter, we'll be sharing some valuable tips on how to maintain a safe and visually appealing home. One important aspect is keeping branches and limbs trimmed to prevent critters from accessing your rooftop and gutters. Not only does this help protect your home, but it also enhances the overall look of your landscaping. Stay tuned for more useful advice!
2. Clean Your Windows
Clean the entire area around the window, including the jamb and sill. Start by wiping away dust with a cloth, then use a gentle household cleaner and a rag to scrub the rest.
3. Remove Old Caulk and Apply New Caulk
Remove any damaged caulk and then wipe away any dust or grime from the area where you’ll apply the new caulk. If you’re caulking the exterior, apply a caulk that’s explicitly made for exterior surfaces between the frame and the home’s siding. Use clear caulk or select a color to match the woodwork for interior windows.
Pro tip: Avoid adding caulk to the seams where the window frame opens. Otherwise, you’ll caulk the window shut.
4. Install Storm Windows
Although few people use storm windows in modern homes, they’re still an option for winterizing windows. If your house has single-pane glass windows, they may be able to work with a storm window, which is an extra piece of framed glass that snaps into place on the interior or exterior of the current window.
5. Feel the Heat
There is nothing worse than freezing in your own home. On average, heaters last 12 to 15 years and even longer, depending on how well they have been maintained. Stay comfy and cozy by changing out your filters regularly and having annual inspections.
6. Let It Snow
We just love the white winter snow and the beauty it creates, along with the joys of sledding, snow angels, and snowmen. With all of the fun comes clean-up and the ability to leave your home. Be prepared, and make sure your snowblower, shovel, salt, and icebreaker are ready to go.
