💡 Odors in Your Home? It Might Not Be Your Septic System 💡

At Darrell Septic Service Inc., we often get calls from homeowners who notice an odor inside their home that they think is septage-related. Before assuming the septic system is the culprit, here are a few key questions we walk through with our clients:

✔️ Is there any evidence of a backup?
If there’s no backup or slow drains, the chances of the septic system causing the odor are much lower.

✔️ Have you ruled out a gas leak?
There is usually a clear difference in smell, but it’s always an important safety question to ask.

✔️ Do you have excessive snow or ice on your roof?
Wisconsin weather can block plumbing vent pipes, trapping odors inside the home instead of allowing them to vent properly.

If all of those are ruled out, the most common cause of odor inside the home is actually a dry drain.

Homes with forced-air heating and cooling systems are constantly circulating and exchanging air. This can pull air through the plumbing system, causing drains that aren’t used frequently to dry out. When the water in those traps evaporates, sewer gases and residue can escape into the home, creating unpleasant odors.

👉 Sometimes the fix is simple: run water in rarely used drains daily to restore the trap seal and eliminate the odor.

If you’re unsure what’s causing the smell, give us a call. We’re always happy to help troubleshoot and point you in the right direction—honestly and professionally.

Has it been three years since your last maintenance and you have not seen a notice from the county? You are not the only one! Many may not see their proper notice this year.

The notices are not meant to be waited for; you only receive one if you haven't complied or are due soon. Legally all septic pumping services have to be filed in your county by your provider after service. We reset your compliance automatically!

We are in the final weeks of routine maintenance service for the year. It is not recommended to have routine maintenance pumping between November 15th -April 15th (depending on the weather) You do not want to take the heat out of your system too late in the year as you can leave your system susceptible to freezing.

Not sure the last time your septic was serviced? Call our office and we are happy to look it up. Call Emily at 715.425.1025

Weight restrictions will be removed this week and routine service begins next week!

Wisconsin state code requires your septic system be inspected and/or pumped every three years. Don't wait for your notice from the county! We are mandated by law to report all septic pumping to the county and your compliance will reset from your service date.

Check out below where the EPA has created a short video regarding septic maintenance. Feel free to contact us with any questions regarding your system.
