These are false widow spiders. We see them very often throughout Rio Rancho, and they are commonly mistaken for black widows because of their dark, rounded bodies.

This is a woodlouse spider. It specializes in hunting and eating woodlice, also known as pill bugs or sowbugs. Its large fangs help it pierce through their hard outer shells.

Found this young black widow in the South Valley yesterday. Immature black widows often have white, orange, or red markings on their backs before becoming mostly black as they mature.
