π‘ VIRGINIA RENTERS: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Beginning July 1, 2026, Virginia is extending the notice period for nonpayment of rent from 5 days to 14 days.
What does this mean for you?
π More time to catch up on rent
π More time to apply for emergency rental assistance
π More time to communicate with your landlord
π More opportunity to avoid an eviction filing
But it's important to understand what this law does NOT do:
π It does NOT erase rent that is owed.
π It does NOT stop an eviction forever.
π If rent remains unpaid after the 14-day notice period, the landlord may still move forward with legal action.
At Women of Endurance, we encourage families to be proactive. If you're struggling to pay rent:
β Contact your landlord immediately
β Apply for available assistance programs
β Keep copies of all notices and communications
β Seek legal or housing support before court involvement
Knowledge is power. Understanding your rights can help protect your housing stability and give you time to explore solutions before a housing crisis becomes an eviction.
