As we enter the second day of the East Side Wildfire, it is becoming increasingly likely that many homes in Red Lodge may be affected by smoke and odor intrusion.
First and foremost, we want to express our sincere gratitude and prayers to all of the firefighters, first responders, and personnel working tirelessly to battle this fire and protect our community. We are also keeping all homeowners, tenants, and evacuated occupants in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
We are grateful that Andrew Newman, owner of Newman Restoration & Cleaning has reached out to partner with us and offer the support of his team and equipment. Andrew and his crew were an incredible resource to our community during the flood, and we are thankful to have their help again during this event.
We have already started receiving calls from homeowners and tenants asking what steps they can take right now to help protect their indoor environment. While every situation is different, there are a few simple things that can make a meaningful difference in your home’s air quality during a smoke event:
Replace your HVAC filter with the highest-rated filter your system can safely handle. A MERV 13 filter is commonly recommended if your system is compatible. If you have central air, set it to recirculate if possible. Portable air cleaners can also help reduce fine smoke particles indoors.
Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to limit smoke entering the home.
If you use a vacuum, make sure it has a true HEPA filter. Vacuums without HEPA filtration can stir fine smoke particles back into the air.
Carpet, upholstery, and soft surfaces can trap smoke particles and odor. Keeping those materials properly cleaned can help improve the indoor environment after exposure.
