Our state is home to some of the finest technical institutes in the nation, and job-focused education has become more important than ever. While South Dakotans believe that technical education is of increasing importance, industries across South Dakota are facing a critical shortage of skilled workers. Our state’s Constitution is outdated regarding the management of our technical institutions. Its
language doesn’t reflect today’s workplace, students, or education needs. The constitutional language outlining governance of South Dakota’s public postsecondary institutions has not been updated since the 1940’s, making it difficult for our tech schools to coordinate programs and efficiently allocate resources. Amendment R will clarify leadership for our state’s technical schools and improve communication. Amendment R is the result of a nearly unanimous decision by the state legislature asking voters to acknowledge our technical institutions as unique educational entities critical to our state's economy. With technical education-oriented leadership, our state’s tech schools will be better positioned to provide students with the career-focused education and skills South Dakota’s employers seek. Amendment R cleans up our Constitution’s language to reflect workers’ and employers’ needs, as well as today’s unique and specialized marketplace. Voting YES on Amendment R means South Dakota businesses can easily find employees equipped with the specific skillsets they need. Voting YES on Amendment R gives students better access to education programs that will bring them immediate and valuable employment. Voting YES on Amendment R will connect workers with jobs, help keep talent in the state, and allow South Dakota’s economy to grow. Vote “YES” on Amendment R!
