Good morning everyone, my name is Mariah, and I’m the heart behind Rapid City Laundry Club. I’ve been helping care for our home, my siblings, and our family businesses since I was about 13 years old. Growing up in a big family taught me responsibility early, and serving others has always come naturally to me.

I live with cystic fibrosis and a tic disorder, which can make traditional public jobs challenging, but that’s never stopped me from working hard. Over the years I’ve helped run our restaurant, worked in our food trailer, and supported our family businesses however I could. Now I’m building something of my own.

I’m from Rapid City and Box Elder, and I love this community. I love music, babies, family time, and cooking (especially pasta… that’s my specialty!). My dream is to grow this business so I can travel, enjoy life with my family, and create something meaningful that serves others.

I believe in God, I believe in hard work, and I believe in showing up for people.

If laundry is stressing you out, I’d love to help. 🧺

🚨 Don’t Press Start Until You Read This… The Complete Guide to Laundry Detergents and What They’re Actually For

Most people treat detergent like it’s all the same. It isn’t. Each type is designed for a specific job, fabric, stain type, or washing condition. Using the right one doesn’t just clean clothes better, it keeps them brighter, softer, and lasting longer.

This guide explains every major detergent type, what it’s best for, and exactly when to use it.

Liquid Detergent… The Everyday Workhorse

Liquid detergent is the most versatile and widely used type.

Best used for
• daily laundry
• oily stains
• grease
• food spills
• synthetic fabrics

Why it works well
Liquid formulas dissolve instantly in water and pe*****te fibers quickly, especially in cold cycles. They’re also ideal for spot treating stains before washing.

Use this when… you want one reliable detergent for most loads.

Powder Detergent… The Dirt Fighter

Powder formulas excel when clothes are heavily soiled.

Best used for
• mud
• clay
• outdoor workwear
• athletic uniforms
• kids’ play clothes

Why it works
Powder detergents contain mineral fighting agents that break down soil and grime effectively.

Use this when… laundry is visibly dirty, dusty, or gritty.

Pods or Packs… Precision Cleaning

Pre-measured detergent packs remove the guesswork.

Best used for
• standard loads
• quick laundry routines
• households that want consistent results

Why they work
They contain a balanced mix of detergent, enzymes, and boosters in the correct ratio.

Use this when… convenience and consistency matter more than customization.

Free & Clear Detergent… The Safe Default

These detergents remove dyes and fragrances.

Best used for
• babies’ clothes
• sensitive skin
• medical or elderly laundry
• shared laundry services
• unknown customers

Why they work
Most laundry irritation comes from fragrance and dye additives, not cleaning agents.

Use this when… you want a universally safe detergent that works for everyone.

Enzyme Detergent… The Stain Specialist

Enzyme detergents contain biological cleaning agents that break down organic matter.

Best used for
• sweat
• blood
• grass
• food
• body oils
• pet stains

Why they work
Enzymes digest stain molecules at a microscopic level, removing them instead of masking them.

Use this when… laundry contains stains that normal detergent struggles with.

Oxygen Boost Detergent… Brightening Power

Oxygen based formulas release active oxygen in water.

Best used for
• whites
• towels
• sheets
• odor removal
• dull clothing

Why they work
Oxygen lifts stains from fibers instead of bleaching them aggressively.

Use this when… clothes look dingy or dull.

Chlorine Bleach Detergent… Deep Whitening Tool

This is the strongest whitening method available.

Best used for
• pure white cotton
• sanitizing linens
• disinfecting loads

Why it works
Chlorine breaks down stains chemically.

Use this when… sanitation or maximum whitening is required, not for routine washing.

High-Efficiency (HE) Detergent… Machine Specific Formula

HE detergents are designed for modern washers.

Best used for
• front-load washers
• low-water machines
• energy-efficient washers

Why they work
They create fewer suds and rinse cleanly with less water.

Use this when… your washer is labeled HE.

Plant Based Detergent… Gentle but Effective

Eco detergents rely on plant-derived surfactants.

Best used for
• environmentally conscious households
• septic systems
• delicate fabrics
• lightly soiled loads

Why they work
Plant surfactants lift dirt without petroleum chemicals.

Use this when… you want a gentler, eco friendly clean.

The Professional Laundry Rule

Commercial laundry services rarely rely on a single detergent. Instead they combine:

a quality base detergent + a booster + correct temperature

Matching detergent type to load type is what creates professional results.

Quick Matching Guide

Use this fast reference:
• Everyday laundry → liquid
• Heavy dirt → powder
• Sensitive skin → free & clear
• Stains → enzyme
• Whitening → oxygen
• HE machine → HE detergent
• Eco load → plant-based
• Specialty fabrics → fabric-specific detergent

Final Takeaway

Detergent isn’t just soap. It’s chemistry designed for specific problems. When you match the detergent to the job, clothes don’t just get clean, they stay brighter, softer, and last longer.

5 Things Not to Do When Doing Laundry (If You Want Your Clothes to Stay New)
By Rapid City Laundry Club

Most clothes don’t wear out because they’re old, they wear out because they’re washed wrong. We see it all the time, shirts fading after a few washes, towels turning rough, athletic gear holding odor. Laundry isn’t just cleaning fabric, it’s preserving it. Avoid these five mistakes if you want your wardrobe to last and look fresh longer.

1. Don’t Overload the Washer
Stuffing the machine saves time but destroys results. When clothes are packed too tightly, detergent can’t circulate and dirt doesn’t rinse out. Fabrics rub aggressively against each other, causing fading, pilling, and stretched seams. A properly loaded washer should be about ¾ full so items can move freely.

2. Don’t Use Too Much Detergent
More soap doesn’t mean cleaner clothes. Excess detergent leaves residue in fibers, which traps odor, stiffens fabric, and dulls colors. Modern machines and detergents are concentrated, most loads need far less than people use. Residue buildup is one of the biggest causes of “clean but smells weird” laundry.

3. Don’t Wash Everything in Hot Water
Hot water has its place, but using it on every load can shrink fabrics, fade colors, and weaken fibers. Cold water is safer for most clothing and still cleans effectively with modern detergents. Reserve hot cycles for heavily soiled items, towels, or bedding.

4. Don’t Ignore Fabric Types
Mixing heavy fabrics with delicate ones is like washing sneakers with silk. Thick items beat up lighter garments during the cycle, causing stretching and damage. Sorting by weight and material, not just color, dramatically extends clothing life.

5. Don’t Let Laundry Sit Wet
Leaving clothes in the washer for hours allows mildew and odor bacteria to grow. That sour smell isn’t just unpleasant, it can become permanent if repeated. Moving laundry promptly to the dryer or drying rack keeps fabrics fresh and prevents microbial buildup.

Why This Matters
Clothing is an investment. Whether it’s work uniforms, athletic gear, or everyday wear, proper washing protects color, texture, and fit. Small mistakes repeated weekly shorten garment life by years.
