Many Raleigh homeowners think termite season begins when swarmers appear in spring, but termite activity usually starts much earlier. By the time winged termites show up near windows or doors, the colony has often been active for months.
Subterranean termites, the most common species in Raleigh, live underground where temperatures stay stable. Even during winter they can continue feeding. As soil temperatures rise in late winter and moisture levels increase, termite activity begins to ramp up. Colonies expand tunnels, search for new food sources, and prepare for swarm season long before homeowners notice signs.
Early termite activity often happens out of sight inside walls, under flooring, or in crawlspaces. Some of the warning signs homeowners may miss include mud tubes along foundations, hollow sounding wood, tight windows or doors, small drywall cracks, or discarded wings near light sources.
Raleigh’s climate allows termites to stay active for much of the year. Homes with crawlspaces, wooded surroundings, or poor drainage are especially vulnerable. Waiting until swarmers appear can mean the colony is already well established and causing damage.
Early termite prevention helps protect your home before problems grow. Managing moisture, keeping wood away from soil, improving crawlspace ventilation, and scheduling regular termite inspections can significantly reduce risk.
