Emotional literacy starts at birth.

So, if self-compassion wasn’t modeled for you as a child, let this be a gentle reminder that the way you speak to yourself matters.

Young children learn a lot about emotions by simply watching how we relate to ourselves and others.

Every time you say how you are feeling, (aka: ‘I feel so angry.’)

Instead of shaming yourself by making hard feelings your very identity (aka: ‘I am so angry!’) , you are practicing emotional literacy.

And every time you learn from a mistake instead of shaming yourself for having made one, you are practicing emotional literacy.

If you were not taught the ABCs of emotions as a baby/toddler, you deserve to learn them now that you are raising one.

For you.
For your child.
For the cycles you are breaking.

We are living out the consequences of a culture that expects children to be performance-ready adults by tomorrow morning.

From the intense milestone trackers to the frantic pacing of modern expectations, the pressure is always on to turn childhood into an achievement sport. We look at an unpolished emotional outbreak or a clumsy mistake and treat it like an emergency, demanding immediate composure from a system that isn't even fully wired yet.

We ask them to carry the weight of adult expectations before they have even figured out the basic mechanics of being alive. But a secure human being isn't built on top of forced, early compliance.

True resilience grows when a child is allowed to fully exhaust the safety of being small. They need to know that their space under your roof is entirely non-negotiable — especially when they are loud, messy, and completely overwhelmed.

“They said sleep when the baby sleeps.” 😅

But my baby sleeps for 17 minutes…
and I spend 10 of those minutes just staring at him,
watching his tiny chest rise and fall to make sure he’s still breathing.

The other 7 minutes?
I’m debating whether to sleep, eat, bathe, or just sit in silence.

No one talks about this part, the constant checking, the quiet anxiety, the overwhelming love wrapped in exhaustion.

Motherhood is beautiful.

Motherhood is emotional.

Motherhood is strength you didn’t know you had.
