If your lawn is developing brown spots this summer, the fix depends entirely on which pest is visiting. The two most common culprits look similar at a glance, but they eat completely different parts of your grass.
Here is the quick way to tell them apart:
🐛 White Grubs (The Root Eaters)
The Damage: Grubs eat the actual roots beneath the soil. Because the roots are gone, the grass can't take up water.
The Test: Try the "Tug Test." Grab a handful of the brown grass and pull up. If it rolls up easily like a piece of loose carpet, you are likely dealing with grubs.
🐛 Sod Webworms (The Blade Chops)
The Damage: Webworm larvae live above the soil in the thatch layer. They clip the grass blades off right above the crown, causing a general thinning before turning into irregular brown patches.
The Test: Check the roots. Because webworms only eat the top growth, the roots stay perfectly intact. The sod will remain firmly anchored to the ground if you pull on it.
