This is a ground-nesting yellow jacket colony. Many people mistakenly call them “hornets,” but yellow jackets are a different type of wasp. Unlike honey bees, they do not produce honey or beeswax. Instead, they build paper-like nests from chewed wood fibers, often in abandoned rodent burrows or other underground cavities. While they help control other insects, they become highly defensive if their nest is disturbed. If you discover a nest, keep your distance and call a professional for safe removal.
