Part 3 of our ‘How To’ segment: this may look familiar and fairly insignificant to some, but beware of the leaky faucet💧A faucet that drips is not normal and will need attention at some point. Not only can the consistent sound of dripping water be enough to get on a person’s nerves, but if left as is a leaking faucet could send your water bill through the roof (as if the leak itself isn’t damage enough…). Here are a few common reasons your faucet may be leaking and some steps on how to approach it:

- faucet corrosion often occurs to the valve seat which is a small connector between the faucet and spout. This is an issue that can be easily addressed by a technician
- damage or wear to the o-ring, a small circular disc that is a part of the stem screw that holds the faucet handle in place. This disc can simply become loose after so many uses or just wear out with time. Replacing the o-ring can potentially be a quick fix to your leak
- a worn out or poorly installed washer is usually the culprit behind many leaking faucets. Any time you use your faucet, the washer is forced up against the valve seat which causes friction. There is also the possibility that the wrong size washer is used or the washer is not properly installed. A sign you’re having washer issues is any dripping near the spout. By replacing with a new washer of the correct size, your leaky faucet will be yesterday’s news 🧰🔧🗞️ ‼️
- broken plumbing isn’t often the cause of leaky faucets, but it’s also not impossible. Loss of water pressue can be an indicator. Broken pipes can lead to a heap of problems in and around your home. If you suspect cracked pipes or fittings, it’s time to call a plumber 👨‍🔧

It’s important to understand what the cause behind your leaky faucet is (or any plumbing related issues for that matter) before you attempt to repair it. It will save you time, headaches and money! If ever in doubt, reach out to a trusted professional. For whatever your plumbing and sewer needs are, call Coldspring Plumbing & HVAC

Part 2 of our ‘How To’ segment: that tragic moment when you realize your toilet it not flushing as it should or not flushing at all! The root of this particular issue can vary from a small list of problems and be fairly simple to fix or slightly more involved, but here are few things to keep an eye out for in case your commode starts misbehaving:

– check to see if your toilet handle is going down properly. This is one of the easier problems to repair. If you aren’t hearing/seeing any water move when you press down on the handle, chances are your handle is disconnected which could be the result of a broken chain or loose nut🔩. Fixing it is as basic as reconnecting a couple of parts
– look for low water levels. If there isn’t enough water in your tank, the toilet can’t flush because it can’t dump enough water into the bowl. To confirm whether this is the source of your flushing problems, look in the back of the toilet tank. The water should be about 1 inch below the top of your overflow tube. This is typically an easy fix and can be as simple as twisting the flush valve. In some cases it could also be the float ball is adjusted improperly signaling the tank is full before it actually is or in more difficult cases, it could indicate water pressure problems or leaky pipes which may require a technician’s assistance
– if the toilet water won’t stop running it could be because of a flapper or fill valve problem which can lead to more problems flushing in the future and a major waste of water 💦. In this scenario, the flapper seal will appear bent or broken and may need to be replaced
– do you see any obstructions in the toilet? This could indicate a clog which can also be a root cause to a toilet not flushing properly. Toilets can get clogged fairly easily with things like sanitary products, the occasional kid’s toy, or just too much tp 🧻. You may be able to plunge it yourself if the obstruction is close to the surface, but more stubborn clogs may ultimately need professional help
– if everything else checks out okay with your toilet and it still isn’t flushing right, it’s likely you may have a drain line problem. This deeper rooted issue has the potential to affect other areas of your home such as sinks, showers and tubs so be aware of slow draining water 🚿.

As mentioned before, some of these scenarios can be easy fixes and manageable for most homeowners, but for your more complicated repairs reach out to a trusted technician🚽🪠🔧🧰. For whatever your sewer or plumbing needs are, call Coldspring Plumbing & HVAC

Part 1 of our ‘How To’ segment: very safe to say a lot of us have experienced this exact scenario at some point! If your showers start going cold or take a really long time to heat up, you’ve potentially got a problem with your hot water heater. Hot water heater units can be electrical, gas, tankless, or conventional. Depending on what kind of water heater you have, here are a few steps you can take to look into the problem if your unit stops working:

- check the circuit breaker for electric water heater-in the event of a tripped circuit, the circuit breaker on the unit will flip for safety
- reset your water heater, but prior to doing so make sure everything is switched over to off to avoid the risk of electrocution
- for conventional water heaters, find out if other members of your household have used a lot of hot water as these types of units tend to only hold 40 gallons of💧and could need time to heat more
- look for leaking water around your tank as leaks could cause units to run out of hot water more quickly
- check for water in compartments of your water heater, any floods in the the unit could mean damage to the thermostat
- if you have a gas water heater, check to make sure your gas is on and there isn’t any gas leaks, the smell of gas could indicate a leak- everything should be turned off then for safety reasons
- check the pilot light as they have a tendency to go out if you have a faulty thermocouple on your water heater, follow the instructions in your unit manual or directly on the unit to relight

If all else fails or you just don’t feel comfortable fixing the problem on your own, reach out to a trusted technician🚿🔧🧰 For whatever your sewer or plumbing needs are, call Coldspring Plumbing & HVAC
