Throwback Thursday

Luckily we have more efficient ways of drying our clothes than hanging them out on the clothesline now. I love how they smell when I dry them on the line, but I hate how stiff they get. And it takes so much more time. But it's a trade of one efficiency for another. Instead of using our time, we use the earth's energy in the form of electricity or gas. And it produces waste in the form of dryer lint. Just as we have to be wise in how we procure electricity and gas and in how we clean up after that procurement, we have to be wise in cleaning up after using the dryer. Make sure you clean your lint trap after every load, and have your dryer vent inspected and cleaned at least once a year (more often depending on the size of your household and your dryer usage. If your gutters look like Niagara Falls when it rains or you have little trees growing out of them, it’s probably time to have them cleaned. I know it’s been pretty dry lately, but we had a very wet winter and spring, and hurricane season is not over yet. (Besides, it’s easier to clean gutters when the contents are not sopping wet.) Clogged gutters can contribute to water damage to your home. As you know, when water can’t make it through the gutters, it will overflow the side of the gutters and pour straight down to the base of your house. As it erodes the soil from your footers, the water will take advantage of any weakness in your foundation and damage it. The water may move into your crawl space or basement and stand, causing mold and high humidity inside your home, leading to rotten joists and subfloors, and damage to your flooring and walls.

Don’t make the mistake of procrastinating on having a fairly inexpensive job done only to have to repair major damage later!
