Kylinga is native to Asia and belongs to the sedge family. It is commonly found throughout Florida in landscape beds, turfgrass, along water banks, and many other moist environments. This warm-season perennial thrives in damp soil conditions and spreads aggressively through both seeds and underground rhizomes.

Kylinga grows low to the ground in clumps that gradually expand into dense mats, often blending in with surrounding turf at first glance. Once mature, it produces taller stems featuring three leaves near the top along with distinctive round green seed heads that sit just above the foliage.

This invasive w**d can produce up to 5,000 seeds in a single season. Seeds are easily spread by animals, foot traffic, mowing equipment, and wind, making early treatment important to prevent widespread infestation.

Purslane is native to Persia but is now commonly found throughout the Eastern United States. This fast-growing summer annual features a single taproot with purplish-red stems that spread low across the ground.

🌿 FLORIDA LAWN WEEDS #15: Florida Tasselflower (Emilia Fosbergii) 🌿

Florida Tasselflower is one of two fast-growing Tasselflower species commonly found throughout Florida year-round. These w**ds thrive in most soil types and tolerate both full sun and partially shaded areas. Their rosette of leaves gives rise to upright branches that can grow over 24 inches tall.

The dark green leaves are ovate in shape, arranged alternately along the stem, and feature irregularly toothed edges that taper to a point. Leaves can reach up to 6 inches long and 3 inches wide, gradually becoming smaller higher up the stem.

Each upright branch may produce up to 6 urn-shaped flower heads, with as many as 60 florets per head. Florida Tasselflower blooms range in color from pink and light purple to red. Once mature, the plant produces seeds with white hairs that are easily dispersed by the wind.

This warm-season, creeping annual w**d is a common nuisance across Florida landscapes. You’ll often find dovew**d popping up in turfgrass, landscape beds, planters, drainage areas, walkways, and even ditches.

Dovew**d grows low to the ground with purple to reddish round stems that can reach up to 12" tall—but rarely do. Instead, it spreads by rooting at the nodes, creating thick, dense mats that can quickly take over. Its fleshy, lance-shaped leaves (up to 2" long) feature hairy margins along the leaf sheath.
