THE RESENTMENT YOU DON’T REALISE YOU’RE CARRYING
I had to learn that sometimes the person you’re angry with isn’t thinking about you anymore, but you’re still carrying what they did every day.
I’ve had a lot of people do me wrong throughout my life. Parents, siblings, friends and people I trusted who betrayed me or let me down. For a long time, I carried that resentment with me. I thought about what happened, what they did, what they should have done differently and why they never gave me the closure I felt I deserved.
But as I’ve got older, I’ve realised that some people are never going to give you closure. They might never apologise, admit what they did or even realise how much it affected you. And I had to stop waiting for other people to make things right before I could move forward.
I’ve learned to forgive people who have hurt me, not because what they did was okay, but because I don’t want to carry that negative energy through the rest of my life. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean you have to trust them again or let them back into your life. Sometimes it simply means accepting what happened, learning from it and choosing not to let it control you anymore.
I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my own life too, and I’ve had to learn to forgive myself for things I’ve done and decisions I’ve made in the past.
There are things that have happened in my life that I’ll never forget, but I don’t need to keep carrying the anger that came with them. I can take the lessons, leave the resentment behind and keep moving forward.
For me, forgiveness isn’t about letting someone off the hook. It’s about freeing myself from having to carry what they did to me every day.
I’ve got too much life ahead of me to keep living in the past.
