We are so excited to share that Katherine White, Docomomo Michigan vice-president, and Curator of Design at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation co-curated this amazing exhibition, “Fabric of America: Our Fashions, Textiles, and Technologies.”

The exhibit is currently on display at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation!

It invites attendees to explore the deep connections between textiles and our shared history.

The limited-time exhibition features more than 500 artifacts from The Henry Ford’s own textile collections— many of which have never been publicly displayed before!

Through five enduring American values — liberty, practicality, inventiveness, abundance and individualism — this exhibition reveals how fabric shapes who we are as a people and a nation.

The stories presented in this exhibition are a retrospective of the ways clothing and textiles have conveyed identity, ambition and possibility across American history.

“Fabric of America” shows how these artifacts capture the country’s history and the diverse experiences of its people, offering a compelling look at how fabric continues to reflect and define us.

This building was designed by architect Mies van der Rohe. It’s located in the Lafayette Park neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan.

It’s a great example of mid-century modernist architecture by van der Rohe, and features contemporary updates alongside original preserved details.

The co-op is located within the park-like enclave of Lafayette Park. Highlights include expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light and offer views of the mature surrounding landscaping and park.

The Koenig House is located in Ishpeming, Michigan.

It was designed by Winston Elting Architects, Chicago in 1963, and constructed in 1964. It was designed for Dr. Harry and Debbie Koenig.

The home was designed to embrace its natural surroundings. The Koenig House showcases the clean lines, warm materials, and seamless indoor/outdoor connection that define classic Mid-Century Modern architecture.

Soaring vaulted ceilings, a dramatic floor-to-ceiling brick gas fireplace, an open catwalk, and a spacious loft create bright, inviting living spaces.

Extensive built-in cabinetry and custom closets reflect the thoughtful craftsmanship and functional design of the era. A detached two-story, two-car garage includes a heated upper-level workshop and traditional sauna.

The current owners preserved the home’s architectural integrity while improving long-term performance.

The Koenig House is an important piece of Upper Peninsula architectural history—a meticulously maintained Mid-Century Modern residence where timeless design, exceptional craftsmanship, and a natural setting come together.

This mid-century modern home was built in 1960, and is located in Detroit, Michigan. It was designed by Detroit architect Louis G. Redstone.

The mid-century modern house at 2771 W. Seven Mile Road associated with the Faygo family. It was built for Philip Feigenson (son of Faygo founder and former company CEO) and his wife, Evelyne.

The home has the features of the mid-century movement, including an open floor plan, expansive ceilings with exposed wood beams, walnut paneling, a dramatic wall of glass overlooking nature, original ceramic tile, and a courtyard patio.

This unique home is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Designed and built by Dr. Luther Bruce in 1977, this “Monolithic Dome” residence is seven interconnected domes arranged in a flower-like footprint — and is unlike anything else in West Michigan.

Features include soaring ceilings, dramatic skylights, and an open light-filled interior space. There are seven distinct living zones that create a radial geometry.

The residence is set on five acres in Oshtemo Township. The property features a koi pond, deck, patio, and mature landscape that frames the home.

This Midland, Michigan home was built in 1959. It was designed by the Michigan-based architect Red Warner

Red Warner was a modernist architect who designed more than thirty-four commercial buildings in Midland, Michigan.

He received his architectural degree from Pennsylvania State College in 1951. From 1951 through 1957, he worked under Alden B. Dow.

In 1957 he started his own architectural firm in Midland. He continued working in the tradition of Mr. Dow and Frank Lloyd Wright, and became known for designing affordable, creative structures.

Warner designed over fifty residences from Midland, Michigan, and extending to Barrington, Illinois.

Livonia seeks private partner to transform historic Gunnar Birkerts-designed Alfred Noble Library building.

The library opened in 1967. It closed its doors in 2019, due to water issues, and has sat vacant for six years. The city of Livonia is now seeking a private partner to redevelop and re-imagine the mid-century modern building.

The building shuttered due to mold and safety concerns, with repairs and renovation estimated in the millions. The city has stated it does not have the ability to fund it. Plans to demolish were halted in 2023.
Now, city officials are hoping the historic building can get a new chapter.

A task force was created by the mayor in December 2025, comprised of residents from across the city. They conducted research and gathered community feedback to explore working with an outside partner.

The city will retain ownership of the land and building, while a partner investor would reconfigure the interior, ideally preserving the exterior and take on rehabilitation and ongoing maintenance costs.

Dr. Dale Allen Gyure, Professor of Architecture (and Docomomo Michigan board member), gave attendees an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of both the Lawrence Tech Campus in Southfield and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Affleck House in Bloomfield Hills.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to those made this event possible, from the Lawrence Tech faculty and staff, to Docomomo board members and guests. We appreciate the time and effort spent on making this event a success!

Following the campus tour, registered participants will be taken by bus to Bloomfield Hills to visit the Gregor and Elizabeth Affleck House (1941), an early Usonian house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and owned by LTU since 1978.
