During a routine inspection, our technician spotted something easy to miss from the ground: a metal chase cover cut too short, leaving a strip of wood trim exposed right at the edge. Every time it rains, water finds that gap and soaks into wood that was never meant to get wet. This is exactly the kind of problem you only catch by actually looking. If your chimney hasn't been inspected in a while, book a full inspection at midtownsweeps.com.

We pulled a condemned factory-built fireplace out of a two-story building this week. Behind the wall was a venting elbow joint that had failed beyond repair, hidden for who knows how long. That's why we inspect.

Why That Fireplace "Refresh" on TikTok Could Cost You

If you've seen the chimney pros going viral for their reactions to home-flipper DIY jobs, you know the cringe is real. Painting over a firebox, caulking with the wrong materials, sealing things that need to breathe, these "quick fixes" can trap heat, hide damage, and turn a cosmetic project into a genuine fire hazard.

Some fireplace maintenance is great to DIY: storing firewood off the ground and covered, keeping the hearth clear, and burning seasoned wood only. But anything involving the firebox, flue, or chimney structure is a job for someone trained to know what's safe.

Not sure if a past project was done right? Midtown Chimney Sweeps will inspect it, tell you straight, and fix what needs fixing. Book your inspection today.

With America celebrating 250 years, we think it's high time chimney sweeps had a celebration of our own.

Actually, we chimney sweeps celebrate every day anyway. In this whole wide world, there's no happier bloke.

Now that the ladder of life has been strung,
a chimney sweep's on the bottommost rung.
Though we spend our days in ashes and soot,
my, what a sight — and oh, what a lot of fun.

We did have to write up two team members last week.

They got it in their heads that playing golf from house to house — chimney top to chimney top — would be a fun idea.

No way.

We explained once again the need to always stay on the SAME roof when playing a consistent game.

But they didn't listen.

So they got written up.

Here's a picture of what our chimney safety manual clearly indicates as acceptable.

Manual Figure 7B: Approved Same-Roof Golfing Procedure
Not recommended. Merely tolerated by management in cartoon form.

A wood insert installed into a framed wall cavity. Construction debris on the firebox floor. A wooden beam sitting directly under the ash door. This family used this fireplace every winter and had no idea any of it was there. That is exactly why an inspection matters. Book yours at midtownsweeps.com.

That "Too Cheap to Be True" Chimney Deal? It Probably Is.

The National Chimney Sweep Guild is warning homeowners about a rising wave of uncertified, fly-by-night sweeps. The playbook is always the same: they lure you in with a shockingly cheap sweep price, then "discover" alarming problems that require expensive emergency repairs on the spot.

A few ways to protect yourself: ask whether the company is certified, be wary of high-pressure repair pitches the day of service, and get a second opinion before approving any major work. A real chimney problem will still be there tomorrow, a scammer's emergency usually won't.

At Midtown Chimney Sweeps, our technicians are trained and certified, our pricing is upfront, and we'll show you exactly what we find, photos and all, so you can make the call without the pressure. Book a sweep and inspection you can actually trust!

A cracked stove body is not something you see from across the room. It shows up in the inspection footage, in the stress fractures, in the buildup that tells the whole story after years of running too hot. The homeowner had no idea. That is pretty much how every one of these goes.

The cap was sitting on the roof when Byron arrived. The flue had been completely open. Rain, animals, whatever wanted in had a clear path straight into the home. The homeowner had no idea. That is exactly why an inspection matters. Book yours at midtownsweeps.com.
