We close our Holiday Care TipTuesday feature with a note about all the decor that eventually makes its way back into storage for the year. This is a good time to vacuum and rotate area rugs (when applicable). That’s because taking down the decor often involves moving upholstery and furniture around the room. Rotating area rugs adds longevity and evens out any wear patterns.

Cozy throw blankets offer the perfect combination of style and functionality. They can easily refresh a room while adding warmth and personality for the holidays. As you accessorize your space for the holidays, be sure to be on the lookout for pills. Pilling refers to the formation of small, fuzzy balls of tangled fiber, called pills, on the surface of a fabric. Pilling occurs when loose fibers on a fabric’s surface become twisted together through friction and is very common when throw blankets are used. Using a pill shaver is another Holiday Care TipTuesday tip that should not be overlooked.

Continuing our Holiday Care TipTuesday feature with another simple step to freshen up your home for the holidays. Flipping and rotating loose upholstery cushions is not only a good longevity measure, but it can ready your upholstery for guests.

We start our Holiday Care feature with the single most important step to get your home holiday ready. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Make sure you are using the right vacuum attachment for upholstery that is gentler on these fabrics so they don’t get worn or snagged. This is especially true for boucle, chenille and velvets. For wool and loop pile area rugs, avoid using a be**er bar attachment.

… Before you bring out the extra throw blankets and accessorize with fall pillows, vacuum and damp dust your upholstery. Then, flip and rotate your loose cushions. Doing so will add longevity to your upholstery.

Our “Fall Care Tips” feature continues with a common misperception about the proper season for cleaning. (In this case, we are referring to what most people call “deep cleaning”). A lot of homeowners clean their carpets, rugs and upholstery in the fall because of the holidays. Whereas this is a fine reason indeed, cleaning should really be performed throughout the year for health, not just appearance. Cleaning in winter makes the most sense because we obviously spend more time indoors. Spring is synonymous with cleaning for obvious reasons. Cleaning in summer helps remove allergens and airborne contaminants. So really, cleaning is always in season!

There are two things we love here at Fiber-Seal. Autumn and care tips. All month long we combine them to bring you “Fall Care Tips” for your carpets, rugs and upholstery. We start this series outdoors, with proper care for your outdoor fabrics. Take advantage of our exterior fabric care services this year for concierge pick-up of your outdoor cushions. We then inventory, inspect, repair (if necessary), clean, protect, and store for the winter.

Typically, the shorter the fiber used to construct an upholstery fabric, the more prone it will be to pilling. Therefore, cotton, wool, polyester, and acrylic are more likely to display these little fuzz balls than longer fibers like linen and silk. Pilling on relatively weaker fibers like cotton and wool will break off the upholstery fabric easier than pilling on stronger fibers such as polyester or acrylic. That is why pilling can be so frustrating on performance fabrics.

Resiliency is the ability to recover from deformation. In our industry, the term is most often used when discussing a carpet or rug’s resistance to crushing and matting. Olefin is an economical choice but it is the least resilient of all common floor covering fibers. Particularly when loosely constructed, rugs and carpet made from olefin will tend to crush in traffic lanes and areas that receive more wear. This crushing can be difficult or impossible to correct.
