We've received numerous calls inquiring about how freezing weather may affect aerobic systems. Here are helpful questions and answers for the next few days!
Q #1: Can I turn my system off to prevent my spray pipes and spray heads from freezing?
No. You should never turn your aerobic system off. This will turn off the pump that pumps the liquids to your spray heads.
If your pump is not on and you keep using water inside the home, the liquids will have no where to go but to overfill the tanks and potentially overflow out of the lids or backup into the house.
Overfull tanks may lead to additional expenses if pumping is needed to alleviate the result. And, overfull tanks can allow sludge to move from one tank to another, which may increase the sludge levels and then lead to the tanks to be pumped sooner than normal.
Q #2: Is there anything I can do to help protect my aerobic system during a hard freeze?
Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done to prepare, but don't let that scare you. Most systems do not experience issues from freezing temperatures.
Q #3: What could happen to my system with a hard freeze?
Again, many systems are not affected by a hard freeze. However, after a freeze these are the common issues found, and most are minor, non-emergencies and can be easily and inexpensively remedied.
Cracked spray lines
Cracked spray heads
Frozen grass within the spray area
Q: #4: Anything else?
A: Many homeowners drip their interior faucets to keep a flow of water through their pipes. Do so only when needed, extra water entering in the system can cause high-water alarms if your system is on a timer, can move sludge from one tank to another, and can increase the frequency of pump activation.
If your alarm activates or you suspect a busted spray line or spray head, don't panic! It's usually not an emergency! Give us a call the next business day, and use the silence button on your alarm if it has activated. Call (903)885-4946.
