What you see on the surface may be only a small part of the contamination.
At first glance, this looked like a relatively small blood stain on the carpet.
Once the affected carpet was carefully opened and removed, the true extent of the contamination became clear. Blood had penetrated well beyond what was visible from the surface.
This is one of the reasons professional biohazard cleanup requires more than simply cleaning the visible stain. Blood and bodily fluids can migrate into carpet backing, padding, subflooring, baseboards, cracks, and other porous materials where ordinary cleaning cannot adequately address the contamination.
A proper assessment looks beyond what can be seen.
Depending on the circumstances, contaminated porous materials may need to be removed so the underlying area can be properly cleaned, disinfected, and restored.
The lesson for homeowners: a blood spot that looks small does not necessarily mean the affected area is small.
If you experience a blood, trauma, su***de, unattended death, or other biohazard event, avoid attempting to determine the extent of contamination from the surface appearance alone.
