NATIONAL FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS DAY
Each year on May 12th, millions of people observe National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. This day shares the spotlight with other May 12th awareness days such asInternational Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases or International Awareness Day for MCS, ME/CFS and FM, which are observed globally.

Fibromyalgia affects more than 12 million Americans. It is a musculoskeletal syndrome and causes a variety of symptoms. Some of them include:

widespread pain

tender points

incapacitating fatigue

anxiety

depression

migraines/chronic headaches

irritable bowel syndrome

irritable bladder

insomnia

hypersensitivity to cold/hot

swelling

fibro fog (inability to concentrate/focus)

difficulty remembering

numbness

stiffness

Symptoms may come and go, lasting a few minutes, an hour, a day, a week, a month, or a year. While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, a variety of treatments and therapies focus on reducing the amount and frequency of pain. They also aim to improve sleep. Therapies such as exercise, massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic care aim to manage symptoms without pharmacological interventions. Prescriptions manage pain, improve sleep, and combat depression, too.

SCHOOL BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY
Each year School Bus Driver Appreciation Day falls on the fourth Tuesday in April, which is April 23 in 2024. Today, we are recognizing all school bus drivers for taking care of our precious cargo during the school year. Whether they are transporting our kids to school, home, activities, or to sporting events, school bus drivers deserve recognition for the job they do.

School bus drivers play an important role in the education of our children. Bus drivers are the person who ensures their safety each time they step on the bus. On School Bus Driver Appreciation Day we send our appreciation and support for bus drivers everywhere and thank them for taking care of our children.

For many, sending our children to school on a bus is a big decision. For working parents, it may seem like it's a convenient option. For others, it may be the only alternative. Either way, the decision to trust another individual to transport your child to school means we turning over the care of our child. Your child's bus driver is the first person your child sees during the school day and the last person to say goodbye at the end of the day. A bus driver goes above and beyond to make your child feel safe and enjoy their short ride before and after school.

Providing transportation is not the only thing bus drivers do. They form relationships with their student passengers and create a positive space on their buses so students are able to get a good start to their school day. In some instances, a bus driver can provide information to educators to assist in helping students. Bus drivers are a great support system for students because they are given an opportunity to learn about their passengers outside a school classroom.

NATIONAL REACH AS HIGH AS YOU CAN DAY
National Reach as High as You Can Day on April 14th encourages us to evaluate our goals and do our best to reach them.

We can define "reach" in many ways. Search Guinness World Records for highest reach and Guinness gives us 322 results. We can reach for our dreams or our goals. Reach for the stars or the sky. We can even reach for the balloon floating away from us much like the one that carried the Wizard of Oz away from Dorothy.

Of course, records can be set for the oldest or the youngest to reach a particular location, age, height or status.

While this day may not be about setting records, it is certainly about reaching high; higher than we think we can. We often become complacent. National Reach as High as You Can Day is just a reminder on the calendar not to let your dreams go adrift. Reach for them. Reach as high as you can!

HOW TO OBSERVE REACH AS HIGH AS YOU CAN DAY

KOREAN AMERICAN DAY
Korean American Day on January 13th commemorates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States in 1903. The day also honors the Korean American's immense contributions to every aspect of society.

In 1882, the United States and Korea signed a treaty establishing a peaceful relationship, friendship, and commerce. While this led to Korean diplomats, students, politicians, and businessmen visiting the United States, few felt compelled to stay.

It wasn't until December of 1902 on the SS Gaelic that 102 Korean immigrants set sail for Honolulu, Hawaii. These families initiated the first wave of Korean immigration, resulting in over 7,500 immigrants over the next two years.

They served their communities and their country during World Wars I and II and the Korean War. During these times, more Koreans decided to emigrate from their homeland; some, as wives to U.S. servicemen, others were adopted as children.

Honoring a Few
Ahn Chang Ho - also known as Dosan, one of the earlier immigrants, Ho is credited with establishing the Willows Korean Aviation Corps in the United States, which later helped establish the Korean Airforce.

Sammy Lee - Olympic two-time gold medalist in diving (1948 - London) and (1952 - Helsinki).

Wendy Gramm - Served as U.S Commodity Futures Trading Commission chair under Presidents Reagan and Bush I.

Judge Herbert Y.C. Choy - First Asian American appointed to U.S. Federal Court (Court of Appeals Ninth District) in 1974.

David Hyun - Architect charged with revitalizing Little Tokyo in Los Angeles.

Sang Hyun Lee - First tenured Asian American professor at Princeton Theological Seminary

Hines Ward, Jr. - Professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers

This day is an opportunity to begin your new year with a clean and organized workspace. Whether your desk is in a private or shared office, cubicle, home or a make-shift desk on the counter, having your workspace uncluttered and organized will help you work more efficiently. A clean workspace improves productivity and inspires us, too. It often gives us a sense of serenity.

History of Veterans Day
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
