🧠 THE MENTAL SIDE OF CLEANING UP DEATH
Behind the Scenes with PhilaTrauma Cleanup |
We clean up the physical aftermath of tragedy, but what about the mental impact on those doing the cleaning?
People often ask us, “How do you do this job?” or “How can you walk into these scenes and not let them affect you?”
The reality is, we’re human, too.
As trauma and crime scene cleanup professionals, we’re exposed to things most people will never witness in their lifetime. Homicides, suicides, unattended deaths, and scenes involving unimaginable circumstances are part of our everyday work.
But just because we’re trained to handle these environments doesn’t mean we’re immune to the emotional weight that comes with them.
There are scenes that stay with you. There are families whose stories you remember long after the job is complete. And there are moments when you have to put your own emotions aside because someone else is depending on you to get them through one of the worst days of their life.
Behind every hazmat suit is a human being.
We laugh together, lean on one another, and sometimes use humor to cope with the difficult realities of our profession. But we also understand the importance of checking in on each other and recognizing when the weight of this work becomes heavy.
At PhilaTrauma Cleanup, our job isn’t simply about removing blood, bodily fluids, and biological hazards. It’s about restoring environments while showing compassion to the people whose lives have been turned upside down.
We may be trained to clean up trauma, but that doesn’t mean we don’t feel it.
And that’s a side of this industry that deserves to be talked about more often.
