✨Confessions of a Cleaner – Episode 1: “The Missing Necklace”
I’ve been in this business for years. I’ve cleaned everything from homes to schools, medical offices, corporate offices, even jewelry stores — and one thing about this kind of work… you don’t build a solid client base without trust.
I keep my team small on purpose. These aren’t random hires. These are people I know, and trust!
I had a client I’d been cleaning for a couple years. She went on vacation, came back, and suddenly couldn’t find her Kendra Scott necklace.
Nothing extravagant… we’re talking about an $80 piece.
Instead of her just letting us know it was missing, and asking us to be on the lookout for it, the conversation of it being missing quickly started feeling like we were being side-eyed — not outright accused, but definitely being looked at a little differently.
The tone changed. The questions changed. And if you’ve ever been in this line of work — you know exactly what that feels like.
Because let’s be real… if you know, you know.
The Cleaners are almost always the first ones blamed when something goes missing or misplaced.
So when this happened… it didn’t sit right with me.
Funny thing is — the one she was side-eyeing is one of the most trustworthy people I know. She had been working with me for a year or two years at that point. Not to mention, she doesn’t wear jewelry.
And me? This is my business — my name, my livelihood. I would never risk everything I’ve built over an $80 necklace.
Heck, I can’t even wear Kendra Scott myself… it breaks me out lol. Not that it even matters, but it just adds to the point.
But more than anything, it was the principle of it all — and the fact that once that kind of doubt is there, you can feel it every time you walk back into that house.
So yeah — I made a decision.
I let her go as a client.
Because I will never keep a job that comes at the cost of my team’s integrity or my business’s reputation.
Moral of the story?
If you’re already blaming your cleaners when something goes missing… we’re definitely not the right company for you anyway.
And for what it’s worth — this has quite literally lived in my head rent free for years.
I still wonder all the time if she ever found that dang necklace. 😆
✨Stay tuned for the next episode… trust me, it only gets crazier from here.
