"I heard a ceramic coating only takes 30 seconds to a minute to apply, right?”
Technically… yes.
Realistically… not even close!
While applying a coating to a single panel of a vehicle may only take 30–60 seconds to cover the panel, the process leading up to that moment is a full day’s job and takes approximately 6-7 hours (depending on the size of the vehicle) before the vehicle is ready to be coated.
Here’s what’s really going on behind a proper ceramic coating installation:
Step 1: Strip Wash & Decontamination Of The Vehicle ( 2 Hours )
Every bit of dirt, grime, tar, tree sap, bug residue, iron build up and other environmental issues gets removed so the paint is truly clean, not just visually clean. A proper strip wash removes any previous waxes or paint sealants from the surface. From there, the decontamination process begins. If your paint has ever felt "rough" or "bumpy", that is the accumulation of contaminates. These "invisible" contaminates are bonded to the paint. You could run your vehicle through a 50 car washes in a row and they still would be on the surface. Through both chemical and mechanical decontamination (using a clay bar treatment) we restore the paint to a smooth bare state, that is now ready for machine polishing step.
Step 2: Paint Correction ( 2 - 3 Hours )
Using professional-grade machine polishers, pads, liquid compounds and polishes, we remove imperfections, oxidation, swirl marks and scratches by carefully leveling the clear coat. This doesn’t just improve the look, it resets the surface. Think of it as creating a fresh canvas so the ceramic coating can properly bond. Because a coating is only as good as the surface underneath it.
Step 3: Panel Prep Cleanse / Inspection ( 1 Hour )
After paint correction, the surface may look perfect, but it's not fully ready just yet. Polishing oils and residue can remain on the paint, and if left behind, they can interfere with how the ceramic coating bonds to the surface. For this, we carefully remove these with a specialized panel prep solution and premium grade microfiber towels. This step completely cleans the surface and properly prepares it for a long-lasting bond with the coating.
Step 4: Coating Application ( 1 - 2 Hours )
Now we are ready to apply the coating! Applied panel by panel and carefully leveled for even coverage across the vehicle. Yes… it takes about 30-90 seconds to apply the coating to some panels. But that is just the first part, it needs time to dwell and then be properly leveled at the precise moment. Normally it takes about 2 - 3 minutes before the coating will "flash" depending on humidity, letting you know it is time to start leveling. This is where experience matters. You don't want to remove the carrier solvents to early and you don't want to remove them too late! Because you definitely don't want to leave any high spots (excess coating that pooled in an area and wasn't totally removed or leveled)
Step 5: Cure Time ( 8 - 24 Hours )
With the coating applied, the curing process begins. Now we wait. This is where the coating bonds to the paint and develops it gloss, durability for its long-term protection. Depending on the coating, initial cure time ranges between 8 to 24 hours. After this period, The vehicle can be exposed to light moisture, but it shouldn't be washed for 5-7 days following the install to allow the coating to fully set-up.
__________________________________________________________
Yes, the ceramic coating by itself may go on quickly. But as you can see, it is only a small part of a much larger, highly detailed process. it is not a quick process! It can take over 6 - 7 hours before a vehicle is ready for the coating to finally be applied to the surface.
Of course, this is just a sample of what all is involved but as you can see, a proper installation takes time, precision and experience and no steps can be skipped! Once applied, the coating forms a semi-permanent bond with the paint and It can only be removed through machine polishing.
