Wednesday's webinar on Frequently Misunderstood Wind Provisions is almost here. Have you reserved your spot?

Join Emily Guglielmo as she shares key concepts that underpin modern wind design, including the reason ASCE 7 wind loads are now based on ultimate-level wind speeds, the four separate wind maps, and how 3-second gusts compare to fastest-mile wind speeds. We’ll explore how ASCE 7 wind speeds correspond to hurricane categories, and review important definitions related to openings and building enclosure classifications. From there, the discussion will turn to practical applications, including drift and serviceability under wind loading, design for temporary structures, and the effects of shielding and building separation. We’ll also look at how wind pressures affect rooftop screen walls and balcony handrails—two elements that are frequently overlooked or misapplied in practice. Throughout the session, we’ll reference current codes and research to support rational and efficient wind design strategies for common and complex conditions alike.

Next week's webinar is almost here! Join us on 10/27 to learn how changes in the TMS 402-2022 Masonry Code can help you today!

The masonry design standards, TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures were updated in 2022 following a 6-year revision cycle. Learn the major changes in these standards which include a complete rewriting of the veneer provisions, the introduction of compression-controlled sections in strength design, anchor bolt recalibration to be based on the ultimate strength of steel, and the addition of an appendix on masonry reinforced with GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars. These changes and many more will be discussed, and the impact of the changes on typical designs will be reviewed.

Don't miss tomorrow's webinar on Hand Calculations and Detailing for Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall per ACI 318-25.

Hand calculations for the design of reinforced concrete shear walls per the requirements of ACI 318-25 will be addressed in the webinar. Emphasis will be placed on specific code sections and changes from previous versions of ACI 318. Structural details and job site photographs will be shown and explained how they relate to the numerical design and code sections.

Join us next week for a great webinar on the IBC Statement of Special Inspections.

The IBC requires that the design professional in charge create a Statement of Special Inspections (SSI) for each project. This seminar will discuss each component of the SSI, including types of inspections, the extent of these inspections, and the frequency at which they should be provided. The discussion will not only include code prescribed inspections but many of the special inspection requirements that are not defined in referenced standards. Several project examples will be used to show how an appropriate project-specific SSI is developed.

Next week's webinar on Wind Loads on Nonbuilding Structures will be here before you know it. Come learn from Emily Guglielmo as she shares her expertise on Wednesday September 30th.

This session will focus on wind loads on non-building structures, including equipment, screenwalls, PV, and signs. The session will discuss ASCE 7 wind load provisions for non-building structures and how to correctly apply them through examples. An in-depth exploration for engineering commonly encountered situations that are not directly addressed in the code will follow. Sample topics include:
1. Horizontal and vertical components of wind load for rooftop equipment.
2. Wind load on rooftop equipment on buildings less than 60' and over 60'.
3. Rooftop screenwalls.
4. Signs.
5. Canopies.
6. Tall parapets.
7. Trellises.
