Dryer vent cleaning, bird nest removal, and bird guard installation at an apartment complex in Tysons, Virginia.

The dryer vent cap on this unit was located on the exterior wall several stories up. You can see in the photo one of our technicians most of the way up the ladder while the second technician secures it from the ground. That's standard on high-access jobs like this, one person on the ladder and one person on the ground keeping everything stable.

When we got up to the vent cap we found a bird nest blocking the exit, which is a very common find on apartment buildings. The exterior vent caps on multi-story buildings are usually undisturbed for long periods of time, which makes them an attractive spot for birds to nest, especially in the spring.

We removed the nest, cleaned the full length of the vent line from the exterior cap all the way back to the dryer unit inside the apartment, and installed a bird guard on the exterior cap before coming down.

This is the kind of job that requires the right equipment and the right team. A standard ladder won't reach, and working at that height needs to be done carefully and properly.

Dryer vent cleaning and bird guard installation in Kemp Mill, MD.

Opened up the exterior dryer vent cap on this job and found a fully built bird nest completely blocking the opening. You can see it in the left photo, twigs, straw, feathers, packed in tight enough to almost entirely seal off the vent exit.

The right photo shows what was behind it. Once we pulled the nest out, you can see the inside of the vent cap and the duct opening behind it. That dark circle in the center is the actual 4 inch duct line, and you can already see lint residue coating the interior walls of the cap.

With the exit point fully blocked like that, all the hot moist air the dryer was trying to exhaust had nowhere to go. That kind of blockage puts a lot of extra strain on the dryer motor and heating element over time.

We removed the nest, cleaned the full length of the vent line from the exterior cap all the way back to the dryer, and finished the job by installing a bird guard on the exterior cap. The bird guard allows air to flow freely in and out while keeping birds from being able to nest inside.

Dryer vent cleaning in Reisterstown, MD on a 3 story townhouse.

In most homes the dryer vent exits through an exterior wall, pretty straightforward to access. But in many townhouses and multi-story homes, especially newer construction, the vent line runs all the way up through the building and exits through the roof. On this job that meant our technician had to climb all the way up to the rooftop to properly clean and inspect the exterior cap.

You can see the ladder in the first photo going straight up the front of the building, and in the second photo our technician is up on the roof doing the work. That's what it takes sometimes.

The other thing worth mentioning with longer vent runs like this is that the duct line itself is longer, which means more surface area for lint to accumulate inside. Townhouses and multi-story homes with roof-exit dryer vents generally need to be cleaned more frequently than a standard single-story setup for that reason.

We came prepared with the right equipment, got up there safely, cleaned the full length of the vent line, and cleared the exterior cap on the roof.

Not something you expect to find when you stick a camera inside a dryer vent, but here we are. A full bird nest with eggs, sitting right in the middle of the vent line.

We actually come across this more than you'd think, especially in the spring. Birds find dryer vents from the outside and if there's no guard installed on the exterior cap, it's basically an open invitation. Warm, sheltered, and protected from the wind. Perfect spot for a nest.

The problem is the dryer vent is a single exhaust line, usually around 4 inches in diameter, that carries hot moist air from your dryer to the outside. A nest blocking that line means that hot air has nowhere to go, which causes the dryer to overheat, take much longer to dry clothes, and in some cases can be a fire hazard.

On this job we carefully removed the nest, did a full cleaning of the entire vent line to clear out all the nesting material and lint buildup, and installed a bird guard on the exterior cap to make sure this doesn't happen again.

The bird guard is a simple but important fix. It keeps birds and other small animals out while still allowing the dryer to exhaust properly.

Recently completed a mold treatment on a residential air duct system here in Maryland and wanted to walk through what that process actually looks like.

When one of our mold-certified technicians inspects a system and confirms mold growth inside the ducts, the cleaning process alone is not enough. After we do the full deep clean, we follow up with a disinfection and sterilization treatment to make sure any remaining mold spores on the duct surfaces are properly treated.

For this we use Benefect Botanical Disinfectant, a plant-based, thyme oil derived, EPA-registered disinfectant. We apply it directly onto the duct walls using a fogger, which lets the solution reach every surface inside the duct, including the corners and seams that are harder to reach with a brush. It's a natural product, no harsh chemicals, which is important when you're treating something that's directly connected to the air your family breathes at home.

The whole process is done by certified technicians only. Mold in air ducts is something that needs to be properly diagnosed before any treatment, not just assumed and sprayed over.

Just finished up another full air duct cleaning in Reisterstown, MD and had to share these photos.

This is one of the return ducts from the job. Returns are the ducts that pull air back into the system to be reheated or cooled, so everything that's been floating around in the house, dust, pet dander, debris, gets pulled through these on a daily basis. Over time that stuff sticks to the duct walls and just keeps building up layer by layer.

You can see in the before photo how thick that buildup actually gets. That's not a thin layer of dust, that's years worth of compacted debris coating every single surface inside the duct. The sheet metal walls are completely hidden under it.

To clean it out we use rotary brush agitation tools to break everything loose from the walls, while the HEPA negative air machine creates suction through the system so all that dislodged material gets captured and removed, not just pushed around.

The after photo shows the bare sheet metal walls of the duct, clean corners, clean seams, and full airflow restored. That's the standard we aim for on every single job.

Just wrapped up a full air duct cleaning job in Reisterstown, MD and wanted to share what the setup looks like when we're in full action! 🧑

That big orange hose you see? That's connected to our HEPA-grade negative air machine, the Nikro unit right there at the bottom. What it does is create negative air pressure inside your whole duct system, so when we agitate and dislodge all that built-up dust, debris, and contaminants, everything gets pulled directly into the machine and trapped by the HEPA filter instead of floating back into your home. Nothing escapes. πŸ’¨

On this job in Reisterstown we did a full system clean: every supply duct, every return, the main trunk lines, and the furnace itself. We access the system from multiple points to make sure we're getting full coverage across the whole house, not just the easy-to-reach spots.

A lot of homeowners don't realize the furnace chamber collects just as much buildup as the ducts do. We clean that too, every single time.

The whole job? Done clean, done right, done the same day. πŸ’ͺ

This is what we found when we showed up for a dryer vent cleaning call recently. 😬

That flexible duct was completely torn apart and sitting in the crawl space surrounded by debris. The dryer had been venting hot air straight into the crawl space instead of outside - which is both a fire hazard and an energy killer.

Our tech cleaned out the entire vent line from start to finish, then replaced the damaged section with a proper new part. After that, we ran a full airflow test to make sure everything was sealed tight with no leaks and that air was actually making it outside like it's supposed to.

Homeowner had been complaining the dryer wasn't working right. Makes sense when you see what was happening back there. Now it's fixed properly and they can actually use their dryer without worrying about what's going on behind the scenes.

If your dryer's been acting weird or you've never had someone actually check the full vent line, might be worth looking into. Sometimes it's not just lint - it's stuff like this.

πŸ”¬ This machine does something most homeowners have never seen before.

It's a ULV cold fogger, and what it does is atomize our disinfectant - we use Benefect, which is a botanical solution based on thyme oil - into a super fine mist that floats through the entire duct system. The mist particles are tiny, around 10-50 microns, so they reach every corner and surface inside the ducts.

What it does is kill mold spores, bacteria, and neutralize odors. If there's been a leak or high humidity issue, or if you've ever dealt with that musty smell when your AC kicks on (some people call it "dirty sock syndrome"), this takes care of it. It also leaves a thin protective coating on the duct interior that helps prevent mold from growing back.

We use Benefect because it's EPA-registered and way safer than the chlorine-based chemicals a lot of companies still spray in ductwork. It's just as effective at killing mold and bacteria, but you don't have to worry about harsh fumes circulating through your house once the system's running again. That matters when you've got kids or anyone with sensitivities breathing that air.

We usually do this after a deep cleaning if we find mold or if the homeowner's dealing with odor issues. Not every job needs it, but when it does, this is how we handle it.

Before and after from a dryer vent cleaning we did in Wheaton-Glenmont, Maryland.

πŸ₯΅ Look at how thick that lint buildup is! It created these walls all around the inside of the vent - basically cut the airflow space in half. The dryer was trying to push air through what was left of that tiny opening, which is why it wasn't working right.

The homeowner thought their dryer was broken. Makes sense - it was barely drying anything, taking multiple cycles for a simple load. They were getting ready to buy a new one.

We cleaned the entire vent from start to finish. Not just the beginning or the end - the whole thing. Every bit of lint came out. After we wrapped up, they ran a test load and couldn't believe it. The dryer worked exactly like it did when it was brand new.

That's usually the case. The machine isn't the problem - it's what's blocking the vent. And when you clear that out properly, everything goes back to normal.

If your dryer's been struggling lately, this might be what's happening behind the scenes. Worth checking before you spend money on a new machine.
