Last week we did a sewer line replacement at a home that was built in the 1950s. The customer had just purchased the house a year earlier and recently started having problems with the sewer line. Roots from trees in his yard had penetrated the sewer line and caused the pipe to shatter and plug up with waste. This is a very expensive fix that could have been discovered during the home inspection period of his escrow. Many homes built between 1945 and 1972 have sewer mains that are made out a material called "Orangeburg". Orangeburg pipe is made out of pressed wood pulp, fibers, and pitch. Orangeburg was designed to last 50 years, but is known to fail much sooner than that. If your sewer main is made out of Orangeburg pipe, it's time to consider a new main line.
