🐻 We Had a Visitor This Afternoon!
So this happened right behind our Tumwater office today and we had to share it. A black bear paid us a visit out back, and honestly? Pretty cool wildlife moment. The good news is our honeybees were completely unbothered (smart bear), and the bear moved on without any drama.

If you're in the area, just a heads up to be mindful over the next little while:
🐾 Keep an eye on pets when letting them outside, especially in the early
morning and evening hours

🌻 Bring in or secure any bird feeders, as they're a major attractant for bears

🗑️ Make sure trash cans are secure before putting them out

Bears are naturally curious and generally just passing through looking for an easy meal. As long as we don't give them one, they'll keep moving. We alerted neighbors in the area and wanted to make sure our community had the heads up too.

Because that's what neighbors do. 🐝

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the tragic incident at the Nippon Dynawave facility in Longview this morning. We are especially grateful for the brave first responders, firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, and emergency crews working tirelessly to protect the community during this difficult situation.

Out of respect for emergency operations and at the request of local authorities, Pest Stop will be limiting service activity in the Longview area. Some appointments and response times may be delayed while crews continue recovery and safety operations. Due to the sensitive nature of the incident scene and the ongoing emergency response, these delays could last several days.

The safety of our customers, employees, and the community always comes first. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we cooperate fully with first responders and allow them the space they need to do their jobs safely.

If your service appointment is impacted, our team will contact you directly to reschedule as quickly as possible.

Please continue to avoid the area and follow guidance from local emergency officials.

Why are ants so bad right now?

If you’ve been seeing ants in your home lately—you’re not alone. This is one of the most common issues we deal with across Thurston County.

The truth is, Western Washington is the perfect environment for ants: • Moisture from rain and humidity
• Easy access into homes through small gaps
• Plenty of food and water sources And in many cases, it’s not just a nuisance problem.

“In Western Washington, moisture is the driving factor behind most ant infestations. If you have damp wood or excess humidity, you’re essentially inviting ants in.” — Billy Olesen, ACE, President of Pest Stop

Here’s what most people don’t realize:
-Not all ants are the same. -Some—like carpenter ants—can actually damage your home by tunneling through wood. Others may signal moisture issues in crawlspaces or walls. University research backs this up, noting that ants in homes are often tied to moisture and structural conditions—not just food.

That’s also why DIY sprays don’t always work. They may kill what you see—but not the source. If ants keep coming back, there’s usually a bigger reason behind it.

A Super Bowl Prediction from Pest Stop’s Most Unconventional Analyst
Every February, pest management professionals across the country do what we do best: observe behavior, interpret signals, and argue confidently about outcomes based on limited data. The Super Bowl is no exception.

While some fans rely on spreadsheets and point spreads, the Pest Stop office took a different approach this year—one rooted in instinct, pattern recognition, and a surprising amount of floor time. Enter Bruno, our resident office dog and now, apparently, Super Bowl analyst.

After reviewing the evidence (two jerseys, one dog, and zero bias… allegedly), Bruno has made his call:
Seahawks.

The Methodology (Peer Review Pending)
Bruno’s evaluation process would feel familiar to anyone who’s ever monitored insect activity. He paused. He assessed. He reacted.
Presented with Seahawks gear, Bruno immediately rolled onto his back—an unmistakable behavioral display. In entomology terms, think of it as an unambiguous signal, akin to a worker ant recruiting nestmates to a high-value food source. Confidence was high. Tail wagging increased. Treat expectations followed.
No pheromone analysis was conducted, but the data felt solid.

Reading the Signs
Pest professionals know that big outcomes often hinge on small indicators. A few extra termites in a trap. A subtle shift in rodent travel patterns. One mosquito bite too many.

Bruno operates the same way. He doesn’t overthink. He reads the environment and commits. That kind of decisiveness would make any social insect proud.

If Bruno were an insect, he’d likely be a highly effective colony member—excellent communication skills, strong work ethic, and absolutely no patience for unnecessary disruption.

Super Bowl Logic, Pest Pro Edition
The Seahawks’ style of play mirrors a familiar philosophy in pest management:
Preparation beats panic
Teamwork matters
Adaptability wins the long game
It’s not flashy—it’s effective. Much like good IPM, success comes from understanding systems, not chasing noise.
Bruno seems to appreciate that approach. He watched. He decided. He waited calmly for snacks.

Final Determination
After extensive observation (and minimal interference), Bruno’s verdict stands: Seahawks win.

Will he be right? Time will tell. But if there’s one thing pest management professionals know, it’s that behavior rarely lies—whether you’re tracking insects, rodents, or an office dog with strong opinions about football.

Enjoy the game, enjoy the snacks, and if insects start gathering around the TV like it’s a porch light in July… well, you know what to do.
