-- Never leave a room empty-handed --

Do a quick scan of the room and try to take 1 item with you that belongs where you are going. Take only an item that you will have time to put away. Never move piles of things. Tackle those on days you have more time. It can be something as simple as throwing a few dishes into the dishwasher or putting away a pair of shoes in the closet.

-- Know the areas most traveled --

Every home has high traffic areas where most of the family members walk or spend time. If you help keep these areas clean on a daily basis it can help keep the dirt down to a minimum throughout the rest of the home. Designate a specific area to keep shoes, preferably close to entrances, where there is a matte/rug that shoes can easily be wiped before being put into a tray. Ikea sells a really nice inexpensive tray that you can keep your shoes in at the door. It can be used to place the shoes in or to put under a shoe rack to catch water from rainy days. If you have pets that go outdoors often, you can keep a towel at the door to wipe their paws. Keep up with daily dirt by sweeping and/or vacuuming these areas on a daily basis - but don't overdo it. Just a quick sweep and that should be it.

-- Do a 20 Minute Family Nightly Clean-Up --

When everyone helps, cleaning becomes a little less overwhelming and an easier goal to accomplish. Have the family help you do a quick 20 minute clean up. Put on a timer and get to picking up toys, blankets or anything that is out of place. Have the kids work on their rooms or do other age-appropriate household chores while you finish cleaning up the kitchen. Quickly run the vacuum at the end and call it a night! Mornings will be a lot less stressful and more time to spend with each other!

Habits to help keep a tidy home: Tip 1

-- Do One Load of Laundry Per Day --

The average home with 2 kids does roughly 7 loads of laundry per week. More or less depending on how many people are in the household. Try to get in the habit of putting in one load of laundry first thing in the morning. If you work 9-5, like most people, you can put the washer on a delay (if you have that option) so that it will be ready for the dryer when you get home. If you do not have that lovely delay option you can put a load of wash in the machine in the morning and turn it on when you get home. Just make sure you set aside sometime somewhere in your routine to complete the load, including folding and putting it away.
