As a family-owned local business with deep military ties, this day means a lot to our family. Krystal continues to serve in the United States Navy, and we’re grateful every day for the sacrifices made by so many military families across our community and country.

My name is Matt, and alongside my wife Krystal, our daughter Sophia, and our teammate Matt York, we proudly own and operate Salty Dog Pest Control here on Whidbey Island.

We started this business with one goal in mind — to provide honest, reliable pest control while treating our customers like family. Being a small local business means everything to us, and we truly appreciate the support our community has shown us.

Krystal is not only a huge part of the business behind the scenes, but she also proudly serves our country in the United States Navy as an Aircrewman. Between her military career and helping keep the business running smoothly, she is truly the backbone of our team.

Matt and York were recently suited up and getting it done on a powderpost beetle treatment here in the Pacific Northwest. Powderpost beetles may be tiny, but the damage they can leave behind in wood is no joke.

We were under a home this week and found something pretty interesting…

A rodent had been completely avoiding multiple traps in the crawlspace. Not just once—repeatedly.

Sometimes it’s not the easy ones that teach you the most—it’s the smart ones.

We recently dealt with a rodent that had been sealed into a crawlspace, and this one turned into a real challenge. Instead of going straight to the traps like most do, this rodent showed strong trap avoidance behavior. It knew something wasn’t right and stayed clear of anything new placed in its environment.

That’s where experience—and a little tech—comes in.

We set up trail cameras in the crawlspace to study its movement without disturbing it. This gave us a clear look at its path of travel, where it felt comfortable, and how it was navigating the space. Once we understood its routine, we were able to strategically place traps directly in its natural travel lines.

From there, it was just a matter of time.

💡 Why this matters:
When a rodent is sealed inside a structure, it has to be removed. If not, it can lead to:

* Strong, lingering odors from decomposition
* Damage to insulation and wiring
* Increased contamination in the crawlspace
