With warmer weather across Whidbey Island, we are seeing an increase in pest activity around homes. Some of the most common issues we’ve been treating this summer include:

Looks like someone forgot to pay rent… 🐀😂

This little guy was caught peeking out during an attic inspection—and while he may look pretty comfortable up there, rats in your attic are definitely not the kind of houseguests you want sticking around!

🐝 Seeing More Wasps Around Your Home? Here’s Why.

This time of year across Whidbey Island and Skagit County, yellowjackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets are at their busiest. As their colonies grow through the summer, they’re actively searching for food and becoming much more noticeable around homes, decks, garbage cans, gardens, and outdoor gathering spaces.

A few tips to help reduce activity around your property:
• Keep garbage and recycling lids tightly closed.
• Clean up fallen fruit and sugary drink spills.
• Watch for increased insect traffic entering the same hole or gap—that often means a nest is nearby.
• Avoid disturbing an active nest yourself, especially if it’s hidden underground, inside a wall, or under your eaves.

☀️ Good morning and Happy Monday from Salty Dog Pest Control!

Every strange noise has a cause—and this one didn’t take long to figure out.

We were called out to inspect a home after the customer reported hearing noises in the attic. During my inspection, I found three separate gaps that were allowing rodents to access the attic. When I opened the second attic access, I didn’t have to wonder what was making the noise… a rat was there to greet me!

Finding and identifying entry points is one of the most important parts of solving a rodent problem. Simply setting traps isn’t enough if rodents can continue getting back inside. By locating the access points and confirming the activity, we can develop a plan to eliminate the rodents and help keep them from returning.

If you’re hearing scratching, running, or chewing noises in your attic or walls, don’t ignore them. The sooner the problem is addressed, the easier it is to prevent additional damage.

🐝 Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Season Is Here!

We’re seeing a noticeable increase in wasp, hornet, and yellowjacket activity across Whidbey Island and Skagit County. As the weather stays warm, colonies are growing quickly, and nests are becoming much more active.

This time of year, it’s common to find nests:
• Under eaves and rooflines
• Inside sheds and outbuildings
• Beneath decks and porches
• In bushes, trees, and blackberry patches
• Around playgrounds and outdoor gathering areas

We’re already helping homeowners and businesses throughout Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Greenbank, Freeland, Langley, Clinton, Anacortes, La Conner, Mount Vernon, Burlington, Bow, and Guemes Island safely remove active nests and reduce stinging insect activity around their properties.
