Pavement ants, also sometimes called sugar ants, can be annoying, and problematic. Here is what you need to know.
They like to nest next to stone like materials such as concrete, cement, rocks, sidewalks, driveways, slabs, etc. They like warm sunny locations with easy access to food and water. These pests often nest near your home and come inside exploring for food and water.
To prevent ants, the following steps are recommended.
1. Maintain a clean kitchen environment to eliminate potential food sources for ants. Regularly sweep, mop, and wipe countertops to remove crumbs and spills.
2. Empty and wash garbage and recycling receptacles. Many people don’t realize that these bins need to be cleaned every once in a while. Organic waste sometimes buildup on the bottom of the bins which can again create a feeding source.
3. Store pet food securely in sealed containers to prevent ants from accessing it. Additionally, store the food bag itself in a sealed container to avoid attracting pests.
4. Vinegar, cinnamon, paprika, cayenne, sonic repellers, moth balls, and other deterrents are ultimately ineffective. Don’t waste your money.
5. Over the counter sprays are usually repellant based, which tend to scatter ants. This can kill some of the ants you can see, however, they usually “come back” a month or two later. Hiring a professional can save you time and money in the long run.
