These are the two main cockroaches I find in Utah. The big dark ones are called oriental roaches. Also referred to as “water bugs” because they can be found in cool, damp, dark areas. Oriental roaches infestations are common in spring through fall.
very commonly come up and out of floor drains and the sewers. The other cockroaches I found year around are German Cockroaches. German cockroaches spend most of their lives hidden and protected. For every cockroach in view in daytime, hundreds can be hidden inside walls and ceiling voids, behind cabinets, inside appliances, and the like. They love the back of refrigerators, microwaves, ovens and underneath sinks. Almost every body part of a German cockroach can carry harmful bacteria. For example, Salmonella and E. coli on the pests' bodies may cause food poisoning and dysentery. Even a single touch may be enough to transfer disease causing organisms onto food and surfaces. Be very careful when cleaning up droppings. Step 1: Put on rubber gloves and a mask. Step 2: Spray urine and droppings with bleach solution or an EPA-registered disinfectant until very wet. Let it soak for 5 minutes or according to instructions on the disinfectant label. Step 3: Use paper towels to wipe up the urine or droppings and cleaning product.
