Ornamental grasses are quickly becoming popular in landscapes today. In Florida, we have a tough, yet beautiful, native grass called muhly grass that can work great in any landscape.

Muhly grass is a perennial ornamental grass that is drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, and easy to grow.

It performs best in sunny areas with well-drained soil, producing clumps that can reach 4 to 6 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide when mature.

In the fall, muhly grass produces fluffy flower stalks in reds and pinks that give it a distinctive and attractive appearance.

Plant muhly grass as a border or use it in mass plantings for a beautiful, drift-like effect.

Poor looking lawn? Some may think: drought, high temperatures, insects, disease, etc. If your lawn looks like this one, it is as simple as cutting it too short. Optimal height for healthy lawn grass is between 3 and 4". Scalping the grass has lasting detrimental affects. Contact Extension experts with more gardening questions.

We’re lucky in Florida to have incredibly diverse wildlife, but natural habitats are diminishing. Homeowners can help by creating a welcoming environment for our wild friends.

Wildlife need food, water, cover, and space. Add trees and plants that bear fruit and seed in your landscape. Plant flowers for butterflies, birds, and bees. Native plants can be a good source of food for animals and insects.

If you don’t have a natural water source, consider building a small pond or adding a birdbath.

Research what kinds of birds nest in your area, and purchase or build them a home.

Protect your wildlife visitors by limiting pesticide use, and using the least toxic products available. Keep your cat indoors as they are natural hunters, even if they are fed.

Not lost with the Tides
Did you know sea turtle nests often can survive storms? Female sea turtles create several nests across the beach throughout the nesting season, hedging their bets. This way if a hurricane or tropical storm hits during nesting season, it’s likely at least a few of the nests will incubate successfully. No storm season is a total loss for Florida’s nesting sea turtles! Never dig up sea turtle nests or collect sea turtle eggs. Contact our Wildlife Alert Hotline, 1-888-404-3922, so trained responders can assist.

Florida lawns need less water in winter than during the rest of the year. In the spring, you may water your grass every three to five days, but in winter it may only need watering every two to three weeks.

Grass grows more slowly during the cooler months, requiring less watering and mowing.

To save water, set your irrigation timer to manual throughout the year. Water your grass only when it shows signs of stress--when about half the blades are folded in half and blue-gray in color, and when footprints remain in the lawn.

Remember to irrigate with one-half to three-quarters of an inch of water, and only when needed.

A little maintenance now will protect your power equipment and ensure it starts in the spring.

Make sure the equipment you plan on storing is in good working condition. Fuel should be drained completely. If you decide not to drain the fuel, add a fuel stabilizer.

Change the oil and oil filters. Take a look at hydraulic fluids and wear points for excessive damage. Check for worn tires that might need replacing, and replace any worn out bearings, batteries, spark plugs, or air filters.

Once you’ve performed all necessary repairs on your equipment and attended to the fuel, it’s time to stow them away and cover them so they stay dry.
