Is your dryer vent breathing? 🌬️

Here's a 30-second check from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: start the dryer, walk outside, and find the vent hood. You should see the flaps open and feel warm air coming out. If you don't, the vent or the duct behind it may be blocked.

Lint that can't get out builds up heat, and that's how dryer fires start. Other signs to watch for: clothes still damp after a normal cycle, or loads taking longer than they used to.

Fall leaves and nesting critters love that little vent hood too, so it's a good week to go take a look.

Closing the vents in the guest room to save on heat? It usually backfires.

Your system was sized to move air through the whole house. Shut vents and the blower keeps pushing anyway, so pressure builds in the ducts and more air leaks out of loose seams into the attic. Keep them open. If some rooms still run too hot or too cold, it's worth having the ductwork inspected.

Confession: a shop vac stuck in a vent is not a duct cleaning. It's just loud. 😅

Here's how a real NADCA cleaning works:
1. Inspect. We look inside first so you know what's actually in there.
2. Negative air. A HEPA machine hooks to the system and pulls the whole thing under suction, so loosened dust goes into the machine, not your living room.

Clean the lint screen before or after every load.

CPSC Publication 5022 warns that lint in the dryer or exhaust duct can block airflow, cause heat build-up, and start a fire. Longer dry times or clothes that stay damp are an early warning the screen or vent may be clogged — don’t wait for a smell of smoke.

Fall laundry is picking up across the CSRA. Thirty seconds on the lint screen each load is the easiest fire-prevention habit you can keep.
