⚠️💔 THE DIFFICULT REALITY OF OWNING A SMALL BUSINESS
I don’t normally share situations like this, but this experience has been incredibly disappointing.
I came across a post in a military spouse Facebook group from a mother of multiple children who was asking for help around her home. As a mother myself, I understood how overwhelming life can get, so I commented on her post and offered to help. She later reached out to me.
After discussing the cleaning, the original estimate was $345–$415, but after the customer explained her financial situation, I agreed to reduce the price to $315 and even completed additional work beyond what was originally discussed.
On September 23, I spent approximately 6 hours cleaning a customer’s home. Because this was an after hours cleaning, I completed the entire job alone, working from 5 p.m. until around 11 p.m., after already putting in a full day at my regular job. The home required extensive cleaning, particularly the kitchen, which had significant grease, buildup, and areas that needed considerable attention. The kitchen alone took me approximately three hours to clean. I put a tremendous amount of physical effort into restoring these areas and even completed additional work beyond what was originally discussed.
The customer was extremely happy with the results and thanked me for accommodating her.
Unfortunately, the customer paid through my invoicing application rather than the payment method I had previously provided. After we agreed to use an alternative payment method, I issued a full refund on September 24. She confirmed in writing that she would resend the payment.
Today is October 8, and I still haven’t received my $315. Despite multiple attempts to resolve this privately, my calls and messages have gone unanswered.
What makes this especially upsetting is that I genuinely tried to help someone who told me she needed financial accommodations.
I work two jobs to support my household and raise my children without the financial support of a spouse. Every dollar I earn represents hard work, sacrifices, and time away from my family.
I’ve always tried to be understanding and flexible with my customers. Unfortunately, experiences like this make it harder to extend that same kindness to someone who may genuinely need it.
I am now taking the appropriate steps to recover payment for services already completed.
This experience has also taught me that kindness and running a business must come with boundaries.
Moving forward, LJC Cleaning & Garden Enterprise, LLC will be implementing new payment policies, including required deposits, written payment agreements, and clearly established payment deadlines and late fees.
I never wanted to become hesitant about helping others, but I also have a responsibility to protect my business and my family.
Being kind doesn’t mean my time and labor are free.!!!
To my wonderful customers who continue to support my small business, honor their commitments, and appreciate my work, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! ❤️
Behind every small business is someone working hard to make a living. Please remember that!
