NWSLA Week 5/5 💧 Wrapping up the 2026 Newark Watershed Science and Leadership Academy (NWSLA) Summer Program with a week of hands-on field experience!

Students stepped into the role of field operators, gaining firsthand experience with the work that helps keep Newark’s water and sewer systems running smoothly. Throughout the week, they participated in hydrant flushing, valve turning, sewer camera inspections, and other maintenance and inspection procedures.

The week concluded with a walkthrough of Newark’s rain garden at Clinton Avenue and Badger Avenue, a project completed through RainReady, Newark’s green infrastructure program. 🌳💧

A special thank you to the dedicated Newark staff who showed students the real-world work in action this week: Paul Kaczka, Mohamed Ahmed, Bhoopaul Etwaroo, Luis Medina, Hamza Abdeen, and Marina Shenoda!

It was an incredible summer of learning, leadership, and hands-on experience in the world of water. We’re proud of all that this year’s NWSLA students accomplished!

NWSLA Recap: Week 3 and Week 4 💧 The next generation of water professionals continue to make waves and leave their mark in Newark!

In Week 3, students became operators for a day at the Newark-Pequannock Water Treatment Plant by participating in a full treatment plant tour, laboratory analysis, residuals treatment, and a valve demonstration to see how safe drinking water is delivered back home.

In Week 4, students put on their lab coats and stepped into the shoes of a water chemist, focused on distribution system storage and downstream disinfection. Scholars performed lab samples to test for heavy metals, bacteria, chlorine residual, and other water quality parameters—the same analyses our chemists perform every day. 🧪🔬

From plant operations to laboratory science, the water industry offers a wide range of rewarding career opportunities. We're proud of our NWSLA scholars for their curiosity, engagement, and enthusiasm as they continue exploring the essential work behind clean, safe drinking water. 💧

Raising the next generation of water leaders in Newark! 💧

On Wednesday, Newark welcomed the NJDEP Youth Inclusion Program for a full day of hands-on learning that showcased what it takes to deliver safe, reliable drinking water every day to their homes 💧

Students got an up-close look at a hydrant flow test, heard firsthand from our incredible summer interns and Director Kareem Adeem, explored the Charlotteburg Dam, and toured the newly upgraded Newark-Pequannock Water Treatment Plant.

From the source to the tap, we hope these future leaders left with a greater appreciation for the essential role water plays in our daily lives, and the many exciting careers that help keep it flowing!

Newark is proud to continue investing in its young people to one day serve their community and protect the city's most precious resource—its drinking water 💧

NWSLA Week 2 💧 Sparking the next generation of Newark's environmental scientists, foresters, and ecologists! 🌳

This week at NWSLA, students engaged with concepts of watershed management, forestry, and ecology, discovering how healthy ecosystems protect our water. On Thursday, students explored a portion of Newark's 35,000 watershed, identified tree species, and examined macroinvertebrates from a water sample collected from Echo Lake, one of Newark's five reservoirs 💧

Programs like NWSLA inspire Newark’s next generation of water professionals through hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and career exploration.

This week wouldn't have been possible without our hardworking staff at Newark Water & Sewer: Kevin Greer, Skylar Reed-McMillon, Erica Espiritusanto, Deidre Knight, Julissa Coplin, Illiana Anise, Emma Turner, and Elizabeth Golden. Your passion and dedication are making a lasting impact!

Tune in for Week 3! 💧 To learn more about the NWSLA program, visit water.newarknj.gov/nwsla.
