This issue of Blaque/OUT feels extremely rooted in the earth, in spirituality, in the source. Our Pride issues are always colorful, often centering JOY. And we love that for us, because you canβt continue to fight if you lose sight of joy. But this issue feels more guttural. Theres a lil bangee in it. We are making room for rage and for pride and for the emotions that arenβt safe and are indigenous to who we are.
We are Black. We are Brown, We are Indigenous. We are Q***r. We are Trans. We are Two-Spirit. We are a global community. We deserve justice. We deserve respect. We deserve rights and we deserve PRIDE. This issue centers all of those things and isnβt exactly polite. It is grounded. Our cover dons an incredible re-envisioning of the Two-Spirit Flag by a talented Indigenous artist out of Canada. But squarely centered, it is rooted by a red handprint that signifies MMIWG2S- Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit. On this Pride cover is the absolutely stunning Two-Spirit flag, the red hand of the missing and murdered but in the background youβll see the face of Aubrey Dameron, a 25 year old Trans woman from the Cherokee Nation whose body was found in Oklahoma after being missing for nearly 6 years. There are currently thousands of missing Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit individuals between the United States and Canada, hundreds that have been found murdered.
As we celebrate the beauty that is Pride, we also bring forward these stories. As we continue this fight for liberation, we remember and uplift the memories of the missing and carry spirits of the lost with us as we fight on.... with PRIDE.
