Sarvada - My Clean Green India

Sarvada - My Clean Green India We are an end-to-end waste management venture in India that incentivises responsible waste disposal and creates value out of household waste.

THE SITUATION:

India is experiencing a waste crisis. With its rapid rates of economic growth, consumption has increased dramatically - and yet, inadequate infrastructure and management processes exist to manage the sustainable disposal of waste resulting from increased consumption

What we see as a result, is cities and towns that are literally choking with trash - resulting in:

• Stifled

economic growth due to clogged infrastructure;

• Increased burden on local governments;

• Serious public health issues and degraded standards of living; and,

• Environmental destruction. This situation is simply not sustainable - nor is it acceptable. But in the midst of this crisis, our team has discovered opportunity – beginning with one simple question: what if all this waste actually had value? OUR VENTURE

Sarvada will provide an end-to-end waste management solution to urban and semi-urban India that will collect and manage the large volumes of urban and semi-urban waste generated, to extract financial value. A portion of this value will then be returned to households and organizations that have subscribed to our program, to incentivize behavioral change. If segregated properly, the average household waste can earn up to $100 annualy - to put things into perspective, the per capita annual income of India is $1500. Apart from the obvious financial boost, proper waste management can result in cleaner streets and elevated living conditions. Don't we all deserve a clean, green living space? If you agree, support us in this movement, and let's build a beautiful and sustainable nation together!

Hey all! Here are some amazing numbers from our recently concluded pilot :

We have estimated Carbon dioxide savings (amount of carbon dioxide prevented from being emitted) of around 2500 kg over the course of our pilot. To put this in perspective, this is equivalent to :

1) Carbon emissions from 1,700 cars, each running for 10 km!
2) Carbon dioxide contained in 400,000 litres of Coca Cola!
3) Carbon dioxide absorbed by 500 trees over the course of this pilot!

This is how much impact a simple pilot project (across 50 households, in a remote location, over three months) could have! Imagine how much impact we could have if we all joined hands for this clean, green revolution! Lets do this together - we'll be back full-time soon and we invite you to be a part of the change!

Stay tuned for updates and have a green week!

Hi Everyone!

We hope you've been doing well :)

A quick update from the Sarvada team:

1) After more than 3 months, we've wrapped up our pilot in Tamil Nadu!
2) We collected a total of 383 kgs of recyclable material and 1754 kgs of organic material during this period of time - more than 2000 kgs of re-usable material that was literally going to waste being dumped in a yard nearby. Our recyclables alone were worth approximately 5000 Rs.

3) Further, diverting this waste from landfill has the potential to make an estimated 2500 kg in carbon savings. (More on this later!)

3) We observed consistent and increasingly accurate source-separation behaviour by participants week after week - which was very encouraging.

We also learnt a LOT from this pilot:
1) That partnering with other companies in the green field would enable us to scale faster and be more efficient in our own operations.
2) That there is scope to look beyond composting and into newer and even more long-term solutions: such as Waste-to-Energy technology.

What's Next?
1) We're spending the next few months reflecting on the results of our pilot, to ensure we're well equipped to serve urban and rural communities in the most efficient and effective way possible. Once we're ready, we'll be looking to set up long-term operations.

2) We'll be launching our Green Forum website - a hub for ideas and views on energy, waste management, and green-reform to be shared publicly by experts and passionate citizens such as yourselves.

3) We're hiring - and we're building out our team: so if you're passionate about what we're doing and would like to get involved, PM us now! You are the centre of this sustainability revolution.:)

Thank you again for your un-ending support, and stay connected with us for more updates to come!

Team Sarvada.

Key Outcomes from our Dec'14/Jan'15 Pilot:

1) Our pilot program across 50 households in Kanchipuram successfully launched and is currently being managed locally by an on-the-ground partner and a local champion.

2) We have hired two staff members to coordinate collection and act as a liaison between ourselves and the community champion.

3) Households have been consistently separating their waste for two weeks to date - thus far supporting our underlying belief that incentivisation can change waste disposal behaviour.

4) We are working with local and Chennai-based recyclers for waste diversion.

We aim to have this system self-sustainably running in this locality for the long-term, and will continue to engage with local partners to enable this - and to look towards scaling as well.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped get to where we are today - we will continue to keep you posted on our progress in the coming weeks.

With Love!

Team Sarvada

Hi everyone! Sarvada is Hiring!

We are looking for part-timers in and around Chennai to help manage our first project, which was launched recently in a place called Singaperumal Koil, which is about 30km from the city.

We are looking for motivated people (who can preferably speak Tamil), who would like to be part of this big clean-up drive! Duties will involve making a couple of short phone calls everyday and site visits once a week. Since we are just starting out, we don't have a lot to offer in terms of compensation - but we have a reasonable sum in mind and we are definitely open to discussion.

Please PM us if you would like to apply for this position or if you would like to be involved in other ways!

Sorry for the delayed update everyone!

We have been working to build a model that would run even beyond this pilot program as a long term initiative.

With a model in mind, we called a town meeting yesterday, and completed another round of distribution and source-separation awareness training - on Pongal day :)

We will be monitoring progress over the next (and final) 2 weeks, with fingers crossed that we've laid a strong foundation for this program to become a transformational and long-term initiative, well after we've left.

We'll keep you posted with any further updates and key learnings over the next few weeks.

Thank you! :)

Just 5 or so kilometres away from our pilot town, lie the beginnings of a makeshift landfill, in which waste from surrounding areas are dumped and left to fester - or, is rummaged through by waste-pickers in search of recyclables to sell.

Did you know that in the major landfills of India, waste pickers as young as 10 work on vast oceans of waste literally 100 times the size of you see here, day and night, in search of valuable waste?

Our vision for the coming year, is one in which:
1) This amount of mixed waste is not dumped carelessly in public in the first place
2) Waste pickers have access to formal and safe employment - as per their expectations
3) Potentially valuable waste is diverted into re-usable cycles that re-enter society - reducing the waste in dumps like this by ideally up to 85%.

We are currently in talks with recycling agencies in Chennai to collect the recyclable component of our town's waste and transform it into something of value - thus potentially diverting up to 25% of the waste generated from open dumping.

Thanks for following us - and stay connected as we post further updates! :)

Meet our youngest source-separator! :)

And with that our distribution is complete. We begin operations on the 1st of Jan. The town we're working with wants a long-term solution, so our pilot is turning into something bigger than we could have ever expected! We're setting up logistics on the ground so that this town can turn clean and green even after we're gone in a month, well into the future.

Keep watching this space for updates in the meantime!

And let the customer sign-ups begin! :)

This week we distributed our bins to around 20 households, with the help of a trusted and well-respected local champion who was quick to learn our pitch and help us approach each community member in a targeted way.

We found that households were overall enthusiastic, and very keen to take action against the trash in their town. They were also quick to grasp the concept of source separation and understand its benefits.

Check out some pics from our first round - and watch this space as we continue our distribution over the coming days!

We've landed in Kancheepuram district, in a traditional semi-urban town centered around a 1000-year old Perumal temple. We could hear slokams (prayers) chime across the streets, as the town's residents went about their day, navigating streets lined with plastics, papers, bottles and other (potentially valuable!) waste. Here are some photos from our pilot location!

We're also speaking with partners on the ground to collaborate on composting and recyclables this week.
