rk, members of the IUBAC Local 1, NY have built and restored some of the most iconic buildings in New York City and Long Island including the Empire State Building, St. Patrick's Catherdral, the Chrysler Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grand Central Terminal, Yankee Stadium, Citi Field and the World Trade Center Memorial. We continue to build as our predecessors did – laying block and brick, setting stone, plastering, pointing, caulking and cleaning – with individual units of material, piece by piece to create a tight, masterful and lasting structure.

We were proud to welcome students for a hands-on exploration of the construction trades, where they had the opportunity to experience bricklaying, tiling, and learn how math and science come together in the built environment.

By introducing young people to the skilled trades early, we're helping them discover career paths that build not only structures, but lifelong opportunities.

BAC Local 1 NY Secretary-Treasurer Jonathan Holsgrove reflects on the vision, leadership, and organizing efforts that helped reclaim the union's place in New York City's residential market—and what it means for the future of the trade.

Brick by brick, opportunity is being rebuilt.

Four years ago, a vision became a plan.

President Jack Argila saw an opportunity to reclaim BAC Local 1's place in New York City's residential market and entrusted Arnaldo Martinez with making that vision a reality.

Through tireless organizing, Arnaldo organized more than 250 bricklayers from the non-union sector and brought them into the residential division while working with signatory contractors to successfully compete for this work.

Today, that effort stands tall—literally.

This stunning 42-story residential building at 175 East 82nd Street is more than another New York City landmark. It's proof that when leadership, organizing, and skilled union craftsmanship come together, they create new opportunities for members and strengthen the future of the trade.

Because of their dedication, BAC Local 1 continues to expand its residential market share, creating more union jobs, more careers, and a stronger future for the next generation of bricklayers.

Local 1 welcomed a group of seventh-grade students to the apprentice training program for a hands-on introduction to the construction trades. Students observed demonstrations across multiple skilled trades, including masonry, and got a closer look at the training that supports careers in the industry.

Opportunities like this help introduce young students to the skilled trades early—today's field trip could be tomorrow's career path.
