Mosquito Season Reminder for Louisiana

Mosquito season is already underway, and activity will stay high from early spring through late fall. Warmer temperatures, heavy humidity, and high tides make Louisiana one of the most mosquito‑active areas in the country.
Here’s what folks should keep in mind:

1. Drain Standing Water Weekly
Even small amounts of water — flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, clogged gutters — can produce hundreds of mosquitoes in days. Louisiana’s frequent rain makes this especially important.

2. Use EPA‑Registered Repellents
DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), and PMD are all proven effective. These repellents are safe when used as directed.

3. Cover Up When You Can
Loose‑fitting long sleeves and pants help reduce bites. Clothing treated with permethrin adds extra protection — don’t apply permethrin directly to skin.

4. Keep Mosquitoes Out of the House
• Repair window and door screens
• Use air conditioning when possible
• Cover outdoor seating areas with netting if needed

5. Be Extra Careful at Dawn and Dusk
Many Louisiana mosquito species — especially Culex, which can carry West Nile virus — are most active at these times.
