The question people ask before committing is usually not what a coating is. It is what changes afterward.

Washing gets easier, because less is holding on to the surface in the first place. Water moves off instead of sitting in sheets and drying into spots. The finish keeps its depth rather than going flat and tired looking. And the things that used to need scrubbing tend to come off with far less effort.
