A lot of viewers have told me they’ve been having power surges at their homes ever since Hurricane Milton. This can destroy appliances so I reached out to FPL and this is what they said:

UPDATE: As of 8 PM, pressure now down to 897 mb with winds of 180 mph inside Category 5 Hurricane . It is now the 5th most intense Atlantic basin hurricane on record. Lower the pressure, the stronger the storm. Only 6 storms have ever dropped below 900 mb in the Atlantic basin in modern history, including now Milton. Atlantic Basin = Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Its eye is also incredibly small, only 4 miles wide in diameter. The Hurricane Hunters flew by it in under 30 seconds. I'll continue to give you updates as they come in. Stick with WINK for the latest.

We may be just barely out of the cone but by NO means are we out of the woods, off the hook or able to let our guard down! Surge is serious AF (as flooding!). Be prepared for 4-7ft surge in our coastal areas.

UPDATE: The center of the hurricane is as close to Southwest Florida as it will ever be...160 miles off the coast. As promised, this did not pull a Hurricane Ian for us and the worst of it stayed offshore as it continues to head towards the Florida Big Bend. Thank you for your trust when I made that assurance.

With that said, this is a large storm and storm surge will be an issue this evening and overnight. *Please please don't get caught off guard.* I'm expecting coastal flooding to be higher in Southwest Florida than what we had with Hurricane Debby in August. I'll be with you all day and all night live on WINK News, make sure to tune-in with the latest. - Matt Devitt WINK Weather

Viewer question: Why is Helene expected to move faster than Hurricane Ian?

TROPICAL UPDATE: Life-threatening storm surge expected with future Hurricane for parts of Florida on Thursday, especially along the Big Bend. If you are told to evacuate, please do so! Preliminary forecast in Southwest Florida is 2 - 5 feet of storm surge from the NHC with coastal flooding, especially at high tide. Please be aware that changes are possible to those numbers depending on the track and intensity of the storm. I'll continue to keep you updated 24/7 throughout the storm on WINK News.
