What should I do with a rat after I catch it?
If you have trapped a live rat, you can’t release that rat until you can be sure that the building it was captured in has been 100% sealed and all potential access points have been closed. If you simply trap and release the rat outdoors, in the back yard, it will return to the property in exactly the same way as it did before. Nothing will have changed. This is why we recommend using snap traps rather than live cage traps; the rat will travel a great distance to be able to get back to its home and colony. You likely won’t travel far enough to release it in a ‘non-returnable’ zone.
