ANT 🐜 CONTROL-
When having an Ant issue in our homes it's tempting to try and control them on our own. Here are some things you'll want to avoid:

Spraying something from a can

What can be bought over the counter is considered a "Repellent". This means the ants don't want to be where you've sprayed this product. Sounds good right?

Nope.

What this means is you've now blocked their chemical trail. They can't find their way back to the colony so they move further throughout your home laying down additional trails. You've now spread them from one area to another. Also, in some cases if they can't find their way back to their colony they can branch off and start a new one. Now you'll have an additional colony on your property to deal with.

It also means that if you choose to hire someone like us Westshore Pest Control you've made our job more difficult. We now have to figure out how to treat your active areas that have a repellent there. This means controlling your ant issue could be more involved and take more applications/treatments by us.
Keep in mind that chlorine bleach, vinegar, peppermint oil and even windex can be considered repellents.

You're not getting rid of your issue you're simply moving them away from one area and possibly to another. You're not treating the actual problem...the Ant Colony itself. That's what we specialize in.

RODENT 🐭CONTROL-

If you're putting traps out on a regular basis you're just catching what's in your house and not addressing how they're getting in.
With the mouse population up they are finding those gaps, cracks, crevices into your home. They're looking for warmth, safety and a food source

What we do: We inspect your property thoroughly and close any rodent entry points we find. We use different methods and techniques depending on level of infestation.
We then return in 7-14 days to check on activity.
We stay away from poison whenever possible. We/you don't want them to die in a wall cavity.

Tips:
grass seed & birdseed are a food source keep them in air tight containers
Check the edges of the walls and corners in the basement with a flashlight once a month to check for droppings. This way if/when you find them you'll know if it is a recent issue
Keep basements and crawlspaces uncluttered. Mice like places to hide
Don't leave a full dog/cat food bowl down. The mice can/will take that and store it elsewhere in your house causing possible other pest infestation down the road

We at Westshore Pest Control are getting a lot of calls for stinging insects wasps, hornets, yellow jackets and carpenter bees lately. Although stinging insects serve a purpose in our ecosystem unfortunately when they build their nests and homes close to ours it can be dangerous. Give us a call if you have an issue or questions. Here are some do's and don'ts of Stinging Insects:

- Do wear long sleeves and pants when mowing the lawn it's the vibrations not the sound of the mower that agitates them and you just don't know if/where you have a ground hive or a hive in a tree.

- If you see them flying around in a particular area keep a good eye on where they may be entering or leaving this way you have something to tell your pest professional

- Do look up. Yep most people walk around their houses and never look up. Stinging insects often build their nests high up on peaks and soffits. So look up.

- Don't try DIY'ing this type of issue even if you've had success in the past. We have the right equipment, experience and know how to get the job done right and safely. Too many of our clients end up calling us after they have gotten badly stung.

- Do make note if you have a reaction when stung. Even a minor reaction could indicate you are allergic to one of the 7 venoms that are found in stinging insects. With each sting the reaction can intensify and this is VERY dangerous.

- Call an exterminator for active nests/hives we know how to safely eliminate them from your property.

QUARTERLY🐜 PEST CONTROL SERVICE-

With the warmer weather rolling in chances are many of you will be seeing pests inside your home. Pests are just a part of life. Rather then be "reactive" to them you can choose to be "proactive".
In a quarterly pest control plan, your technician comes out once every quarter to apply exterior preventative measures to keep critters outside.

Warranty: A big plus is our 365 day warranty. If you experience a recurrence of a crawling insect infestation we will come out and take care of it between treatments at no cost to you.
What we do: We come out and treat the exterior of your home every 3-months. Our goal is to create a barrier to keep crawling insects out. We don't lock you into a contract. If you want to discontinue service just let us know before your next one.

What not to do: If you're having an issue DO NOT SPRAY. This will kill on contact but will also spread the infestation to other rooms.
