Summer is almost here and the kids are home, which means more wear and tear on your carpet. Here are some tips on caring for your carpets during these summer months:
Vacuum thoroughly weekly, to remove debris, dirt and other dry soil. These particles can rub on the fibers and cause wear, dulling and matting your carpet. Vacuum high traffic areas more frequently as needed. Simple, but this is the #1 tip for caring for your carpet.
Professional steam / hot water extraction cleaning is recommended every 12 to 18 months to remove all remaining debris, small particles and dust that regular vacuuming doesn't remove. This also removes residue from spots and spills that cause dirt to cling to the carpet fibers. These spots can become worse with time if not extracted from your carpet.
Spots & spills should be addressed promptly: there are ways to safely remove or minimize the damage to your carpet.
MUD: Let dry thoroughly, pick up larger pieces of dry mud, then vacuum thoroughly to pick up the small pieces of dried dirt. Don't try to get it out while still wet.
SPILLS: Blot with a towel or cloth - don't rub - blotting will pull out much of the liquids and keep them from setting into the fibers.
Try flushing stains with clear water - don't use dish soap or other detergents as they can stick to the fibers, collecting dirt, or oxygenating products that can bleach your rugs.
If this doesn't do it, feel free to call Dan for advice on quick stain removal, which can depend on the type of stain, and your carpet. Most importantly, he can advise you on how to prevent making that stain or spill worse, or permanent.
