Animals in your crawlspace or attic can cause several significant types of damage. Here are three major issues they can cause:

Structural Damage: Animals, particularly rodents like rats and squirrels, may chew on beams, insulation, or even electrical wires. This can weaken the structure of your attic or crawlspace, compromising the integrity of the building. Chewing on wires also poses a fire hazard.

Insulation Damage: Animals often use insulation as nesting material. They might rip it apart or urinate/defecate on it, rendering it less effective and potentially causing unpleasant odors. Damaged insulation can lead to higher energy bills as the thermal barrier is reduced.

Health and Safety Risks: Animal droppings, urine, and saliva can harbor dangerous bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Insects like fleas or ticks can also infest the area, potentially spreading to other parts of the house. The presence of these pests increases the risk of diseases like hantavirus or salmonella.

These damages not only compromise the safety and integrity of the home but can also be costly to repair.

Squirrels accessing attic spaces can be a common problem for homeowners, and it's important to address this issue promptly. Here are some reasons why it's a concern and what you can do about it:

Structural Damage: Squirrels can cause structural damage to your home by chewing through wood, insulation, and electrical wiring. This can compromise the integrity of the building and pose fire hazards.

Nesting: Squirrels may build nests in attics, using insulation materials and creating a mess. Their nesting activities can further damage the attic space and reduce the effectiveness of insulation.

Noise Disturbance: Squirrels are active and noisy creatures. Their presence in the attic can lead to disturbing sounds, particularly during the early morning and late evening, affecting your peace and comfort.

Health Risks: Squirrel droppings can carry diseases and parasites. If left unchecked, the accumulation of droppings in the attic can pose health risks to occupants as well as attract other pests.

Electrical Damage: Squirrels have a tendency to chew on wires, which can result in electrical malfunctions and pose a fire hazard. This can lead to expensive repairs and potential danger.

To address the issue of squirrels accessing attic spaces, consider the following steps:

Identify Entry Points: Inspect your home to identify how squirrels are gaining access to the attic. Common entry points include gaps in the roof, vents, and openings in the eaves.

Seal Entry Points: Once identified, seal off these entry points to prevent further access. Use materials such as wire mesh, caulk, or other appropriate methods to close gaps and openings.

Remove Squirrels: If squirrels are already present in the attic, it's important to remove them humanely. Consider hiring a professional wildlife removal service to handle this task.

Clean and Disinfect: After removing the squirrels, clean and disinfect the attic space to eliminate any potential health hazards associated with droppings and urine.

Repair and Restore: Repair any damage caused by the squirrels, including chewed wires, insulation, and other structural elements. Restore the attic to its proper condition.

If you're unsure about how to handle squirrels in your attic, it's advisable to consult with a professional pest control or wildlife removal service to ensure a safe and effective resolution of the issue.

Using animal-proof foundation vents is important for several reasons:

Preventing Entry of Pests: Animal-proof foundation vents are designed to keep out pests such as rodents, insects, and small animals. These vents have features that make it difficult for animals to enter and create nests or burrows within the foundation of a building.

Avoiding Structural Damage: Animals seeking shelter may cause structural damage to a building's foundation. They may burrow into the foundation, leading to weakened structures and potential issues with the stability of the building.

Protecting Insulation: Animals can damage insulation materials within the foundation, reducing their effectiveness. This can impact the energy efficiency of a building and increase heating or cooling costs.

Preventing Health Risks: Pests and animals can carry diseases, parasites, and allergens. By preventing their entry into the foundation, you reduce the risk of these health hazards spreading into the living spaces of a building.

Maintaining Aesthetics: Animals entering the foundation may create unsightly nests or damage the exterior of the building. Animal-proof vents help in maintaining the aesthetics of the property.

Avoiding Noise and Disturbance: Animals within the foundation can create noise and disturbances, affecting the peace and comfort of the occupants. Using animal-proof vents helps in keeping the living spaces quiet and undisturbed.

Compliance with Building Codes: In some areas, building codes may require the use of animal-proof foundation vents to ensure the safety and integrity of structures.

Overall, using animal-proof foundation vents is a proactive measure to protect buildings from potential damage, health risks, and nuisances associated with unwanted animal intrusions.

Here is what we are working on this week in Cookeville, TN.

Hardie board siding, also known as fiber cement siding, is a popular siding option for many homeowners due to its numerous advantages. While it is considered one of the best siding options, it is essential to note that the choice of siding material depends on various factors, including climate, budget, aesthetic preferences, and specific needs. Some reasons why Hardie board siding is often favored include:

Durability: Hardie board siding is known for its exceptional durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions, such as wind, rain, hail, and extreme temperatures. It is also resistant to rot, pests, and fire, making it a reliable choice for long-term use.

Low Maintenance: Unlike some other siding materials, Hardie board siding requires minimal maintenance. It is resistant to fading, warping, and cracking, reducing the need for frequent repairs or repainting. This can result in long-term cost savings for homeowners.

Versatility: Hardie board siding comes in a variety of textures, styles, and colors, allowing homeowners to choose an option that suits their aesthetic preferences and architectural style. It can mimic the appearance of wood, stucco, or masonry, providing versatility in design choices.

Sustainability: Fiber cement siding is an environmentally friendly option, as it is made from sustainable and recyclable materials. It can contribute to a home's energy efficiency by providing insulation and reducing heating and cooling costs.

Longevity: When properly installed and maintained, Hardie board siding can last for several decades. Its long lifespan makes it a cost-effective choice for homeowners looking for a durable and reliable siding option.
