Starting our "This or That" series with an age old pool question...
πββοΈ Pool filter dilemma: Sand vs Cartridge β which one actually wins for your backyard oasis?
Sand Filters
Pros:
β
Cheaper upfront (often $300β$800 for the system)
β
Super low-maintenance β just backwash every few weeks
β
Very durable β sand media lasts 5β7+ years before needing replacement
β
Handles large pools and heavy debris loads like a champ
β
Forgiving if you forget maintenance for a bit
Cons:
β Only filters down to ~20β25 microns β water is clear but not crystal clear (more visible fine particles/pollen sometimes)
β Uses more water (backwashing wastes 50β100+ gallons each time)
β Higher energy use (needs more pump pressure to push through sand)
β Backwash water can be messy/dirty to deal with
Cartridge Filters
Pros:
β
Filters finer particles (~10β15 microns) β noticeably clearer, sparkling water (great if you hate seeing tiny specks!)
β
More energy-efficient (lower pressure = pump works less = lower electric bill)
β
No backwashing β saves thousands of gallons of water per season
β
Easier on the environment and your wallet long-term for water usage
β
Quieter operation in many setups
Cons:
β Higher initial cost (usually more expensive than sand)
β Requires more hands-on maintenance β hoses off the cartridges every 1β4 weeks (can be messy if you're not careful)
β Cartridges wear out and need replacement every 1β3 years (~$50β$200+ each depending on size)
β Can clog faster in very dirty/heavy pollen areas if not cleaned regularly
Bottom line for most people:
Want set-it-and-forget-it simplicity + lower upfront cost? β Go sand
Obsessed with super clear water and don't mind a little cleaning? β Go cartridge
What are you running on your pool right now β sand, cartridge, or DE? Any horror stories or wins to share? π
