From a 7-man crew back to solo: My experience in the industry.
Looking back at this picture from 2017. That’s my old van on the right. If you look closely, you can see a line of vehicles backed up behind that Porsche as far as the eye can see. That specific day, we had 35 cars lined up ready to be washed. I had a full 12x15 canopy tent set up with side walls and a team of 7 guys working with me.
We had secured a major contract with a local golf club in Alpine, New Jersey.

I originally landed the job because I was the only detailer around who actually carried proper liability insurance and looked completely professional. But even with documenting every single car and logging license plates, things got messy. The club management started accusing us of missing cars that we had absolutely completed—even when I showed them the photo proof. On top of that, the club manager or VIP guests would constantly cut the line with their own cars, completely breaking our rhythm and throwing the whole crew off schedule.

I eventually walked away from that contract because of the constant headaches, but at the time, I thought I was on top of the world because I had a massive team. I was writing checks to workers and depositing money, but I didn't truly understand the real cost of running a large-scale operation. Once you factor in proper payroll, workers' comp, state taxes, and massive insurance premiums for a crew that size, the reality hits you fast. I was expanding way quicker than my actual backend structure could handle.

I see the exact same thing happening in our industry today. A lot of guys start a detailing operation, quickly hire a crew, and think it's an automatic cash machine. But many of them are running under the table without proper coverage. The guys who are truly making it work at a high level are spending massive amounts of money on accountants, high-ticket insurance policies, and proper tax compliance. It takes a ton of consistent, high-paying work just to keep that machine fed.

For me, the lesson was painful but necessary. I chose to transition back to a solo operation. It is significantly less stress, my overhead is low, and I have total control over the quality of every vehicle I touch. A massive crew looks great from the outside, but if the foundation isn't perfectly set, it can fall apart in an instant. Doing things the right way is worth the peace of mind.

Looking back at these photos to what we see today in detailing. My business was ahead of it's time and to this day i still am. Just have to renovate a few things but the best has yet to come.

EXTREME TREE SAP REMOVAL BEFORE & AFTER
Last week NJ had a severe heat wave where the temperature reached 110+ degrees. A powerful thunderstorm took place before that 110 degree day and this jeep wrangler was parked underneath the pine tree.

The next day there was sap all over the vehicle and the vehicle sat untouched the entire day through a 110 degree heat wave making the temperature of the hood reach over 180 degrees.

The sap baked and sizzled on the hood like Bannana foster being carmelized and this was the result. An imprenetrable baked sap that was resistant to alcohol, Stoner Tarminator, mineral spirits.

Although the lighter translucent areas were easily removed with polishing. It was the heavy dark brown spots that were the real challenge but the results came out flawless

This beautiful 1963 Jaguar Mk2 was an absolute joy to work on. It is mostly original, featuring a stunning older exterior repaint.

Because vintage beauties require extra care, the process had to be incredibly delicate:

Interior: Very fragile and deteriorating. Cleaned safely using only a gentle wipe down with Optimum No Rinse (ONR).

Exterior: Weak door seals meant a standard wash was out of the question. I did a careful rinseless wash, a clay bar treatment, and sealed the shine with Optimum Opti-Seal and Meguiar’s Xpress Wax.

Wheels: Cleaned simply with soap and water.

Tires: Dressed with CarPro PERL. Classic tires always absorb dressing beautifully!

Chrome: Polished to a mirror finish using P&S Metal Polish.

To wrap up the job, I referred the owner to a trusted local upholstery shop to help bring the aging interior back to life.

It is always an honor to preserve automotive history

I’ve been pivoting from the usual before‑and‑after detailing videos to mixing in real‑life comedy from my day‑to‑day detailing experiences — and honestly, the response has shocked me. Turns out making people laugh brings in just as much business as showing a perfect interior transformation.

Let’s be real: there are thousands of detailing videos out there doing the same thing — a maintenance wash on a car that’s already clean, foam, rinse, dry, done. But the content I’m making now comes straight from 12 years of actual on‑site experiences, and this one is a classic.

Whenever I show up to detail a family vehicle, the kids come outside. And instead of playing, running around, or doing kid things… they stand at the door of the car and stare at me. No blinking. No talking. No moving. Just pure, silent observation. For hours.

And trust me — I used to work with kids as a pediatric dental assistant, so I understand curiosity. But I can count on both hands the number of times a kid has watched me for an entire detail like a statue. I’ve even had full families pull out chairs and watch me for three hours straight while detailing their car and couldn't even take a lunch break in peace because i guess they would have watched that too.

It’s awkward. It’s hilarious. And it’s 100% real detailing life.

The kid in this video? AI‑generated.
The background, the detailing, the awkwardness? Very real.
