Your Septic System Is Not a Trash Can!!!!
Most septic emergencies don’t happen overnight. They build slowly over time because of what gets flushed, rinsed, or poured down drains every single day.
Your septic system is designed to handle wastewater and human waste. That’s it. It is not built for grease, “flushable” wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, cat litter, coffee grounds, chemicals, or food scraps.
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:
“But the package says flushable.”
Unfortunately, “flushable” does not mean septic safe.
Wipes are one of the most common causes of clogs, backups, and costly septic repairs. They do not break down the same way toilet paper does, and over time they can create major blockages inside pipes, pumps, and tanks.
Grease is another major issue. Even if it goes down the drain warm, it cools and hardens inside your system. Over time, it builds up and restricts flow.
A healthy septic system depends on balance. Helpful bacteria inside your tank work hard to break down waste naturally. Harsh chemicals, antibacterial cleaners, and excessive water use can disrupt that process and shorten the life of your system.
Protecting your septic system starts with small habits:
• Only flush toilet paper
• Avoid pouring grease or oils down drains
• Spread out laundry loads during the week
• Schedule regular inspections and pumping
• Be mindful of what goes into every drain in your home
A septic system is one of the most important systems on your property, and when cared for properly, it can last for decades.
At Dawes Septic & Repair, education matters just as much as service. The more homeowners understand their systems, the fewer emergencies they face later.
