Baked-on grease is stubborn. But the way most people fight it does more damage than the grease ever would.
If your black stovetop has gone cloudy, scratched, or dull over time — it wasn’t the grease. It was the cleaning method.
What Ruins a Stovetop
Green scotch-brite or melamine sponges
Too abrasive. They cut through the aged black coating, especially when paired with an abrasive cleaner.
Bar Keeper’s Friend
Works the first time. Then the second. Then you notice cloudy patches wherever you scrubbed hardest — that’s the finish wearing away, not the grease losing.
Oven cleaner (Easy-Off, etc.)
It works, but inefficiently. It needs long dwell time, it’s messy, and it’s not built for this surface. It’s also lye-based — more on that below.
Razor blades
Fine on flat glass. On the curved edges around burners, it’s a gamble. Sooner or later, you nick the paint.
Pumice
Scratches almost immediately. Skip it entirely.
What Actually Works
1. Soap + a soft blue sponge — for routine maintenance
Let the soap sit on the surface first, then scrub. This alone handles light, everyday buildup.
2. Ammonia + #0000 steel wool — for deep, baked-on grease
This is the method. Turn on the vent fan. Apply about 15 drops of ammonia over the baked grease and let it rest. Ball up fine-grade ( #0000) steel wool and gently work it over the area in small circles. The grease lifts away without touching the finish underneath.
For truly stubborn buildup: coat the grease in ammonia, cover with plastic wrap, and let it sit overnight. By morning, the grease comes off like butter.
Why Ammonia Beats Oven Cleaner
Oven cleaners are typically lye-based (sodium hydroxide), sitting around pH 13 — corrosive enough to irritate skin and lungs, and harsh enough to degrade finishes over repeated use.
Ammonia is a milder alkaline cleaner, effective at a fraction of the concentration. It’s the same reason it was a staple for mopping floors for decades — strong on grease, gentle on the surface it’s cleaning.
Used correctly, ammonia is safe on black painted stovetops, requires only a small amount, and outperforms nearly every commercial degreaser on the market for this specific job.
